Mariah Carey racks up American Music Awards nominations

Mariah Carey's return to dominance on the pop scene was further punctuated by Tuesday's (9/20) unveiling of the nominees for this year's American Music Awards.

Carey leads this year's pack of contenders with a total of four nominations, including Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Album ("The Emancipation of Mimi") in both the Pop/Rock and Soul/Rhythm & Blues genres.

Kelly Clarkson, 50 Cent and Green Day trailed Carey with three nods apiece.

50 is in contention for Favorite Male Artist in the Pop/Rock and Rap/Hip-Hop genres, while his sophomore set, "The Massacre," is up for Favorite Album in the Rap/Hip-Hop category.

Green Day scored nominations for Favorite Band, Duo or Group in the Pop/Rock genre and Favorite Artist in the Alternative genre, as well as Favorite Album in the Pop/Rock genre for "American Idiot."
