John Scofield Changes Lineup for April Tour
Groove jazz guitarist John Scofield is embarking on the second leg of his spring tour, changing his lineup to include former Soul Coughing keyboardist Mark De Gli Antoni and Deep Banana Blackout drummer Eric Kalb.
For the rest of April, the group hits theaters and auditoriums, larger venues than Scofield usually plays. Shows are selling well, according to his publicist, with sell-outs last month at New York's Irving Plaza and Boston's Sommerville Theatre.
The new lineup, which also includes guitarist Avi Bortnick, is essentially the core of Scofield's recent jazz-funk album "Bump" (Verve). The album continues the '60s groove jazz direction that Medeski, Martin and Wood rekindled in the '90s; the trio collaborated with Scofield, a jazz-fusion player, on his 1998 album "A Go Go."
Guitarist Charlie Hunter and his trio will open for Scofield on April 14-17. Medeski, Martin and Wood bassist Chris Wood, who played on "Bump," may join Scofied, Bortnick and drummer Ben Perowsky for a few festival dates in June and July.
