Posthumous Elliott Smith album due in October
"From a Basement on the Hill," an album of material that singer/songwriter Elliott Smith recorded prior to his death in the fall of 2003, will be issued by Anti Records on Oct. 2003.
According to a statement on the official Smith website, Smith recorded the album's 15 tracks at various studios, and at his homes in Los Angeles and Portland, OR.
While Smith is credited as the album's producer, final production of the set was completed by Smith's family and friends.
Among the tracks is "Coast to Coast," which features Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips on drums, and "Pretty (Ugly Before)," which will also appear on the MoveOn.org compilation "Future Soundtrack for America," a benefit album that hits stores on Aug. 10.
Smith died of two stab wounds to his chest on Oct. 21, and police initially listed the death as an apparent suicide. However, a Los Angeles coroner's examination failed to determine conclusively if he died of self-inflicted stab wounds or if he was attacked.
The singer battled various addictions during his life, but the autopsy found no traces of illegal or controlled substances in his system. Los Angeles police haven't closed their investigation into his death.
Smith, who was 34, picked up a 1998 Oscar nomination for "Miss Misery," a song from the movie "Good Will Hunting."
