Clubs play host to new Folk Implosion lineup
With a new album titled "The New Folk Implosion" set for release on March 4, a retooled edition of Folk Implosion takes to the road in late February.
Past Folk Implosion albums were a collaboration of Sebadoh's Lou Barlow and ex-Palace Brother John Davis, who has since exited the music business. That incarnation of Folk Implosion was best known for its hit "Natural One," which appeared on the "Kids" soundtrack.
Joining Barlow on "The New Folk Implosion" are Sebadoh drummer Russell Pollard and guitarist Imaad Wasif. The group came together after the Melvins asked Barlow and Pollard to join them on a tour, playing whichever Sebadoh and Folk Implosion songs they chose.
"We decided to do it, but I figured the best thing to do would be to reform the Folk Implosion with Imaad Wassif, who was writing songs with Russell at the time as Alaska," Barlow said in a statement. "I thought it would be interesting to have [Wassif] play guitar, because I'd known Imaad for years and always liked him.
"We threw the band together in about 10 days, learned a bunch of old Folk Implosion stuff and went on tour with the Melvins. And it really came together. Once we got back from being on tour, we decided that we were a band and started writing songs."
An animated video for "Brand of Skin," the first single from "The New Folk Implosion," will soon debut at the iMusic website, according to the band's publicist. It was created by the Brothers Chaps (Mike and Matt Chapman), the duo behind the animated humor website homestarrunner.com.
The members of Folk Implosion will appear in the upcoming film Laurel Canyon, which opens on March 7. The group plays a struggling Brit-pop band trying to come up with a hit single along with their record producer, who is played by Frances McDormand.
