Raul Malo travels the club circuit solo

Raul Malo, frontman and principal songwriter of the Mavericks, is on the road to promote his debut solo album, "Today" (Higher Octave).

Steve Berlin (Buckwheat Zydeco, Dave Alvin) produced "Today," which hit stores in late October. Among the tracks on the new album is "It Takes Two to Tango," a duet with Shelby Lynne. (The song was popularized by Ray Charles and Betty Carter in the early '60s).

A free MP3 download of the album's new single "Every Little Thing About You" is available on Malo's official website.

Malo served as producer on the latest K.T. Oslin album, "Live Close By, Visit Often" (BNA). He also sang two songs on "Canto," the latest album from Los Super Seven. The Mavericks are on "permanent hiatus," Malo recently told USA Today.

The Mavericks gained much critical acclaim throughout the '90s, releasing five albums. The band also had some popular successes, selling more than a million copies of its 1994 album, "What a Crying Shame" (MCA) and more than 500,000 copies of the follow-up, 1995's "Music for All Occasions" (MCA).

"Here Comes the Rain," a single from "Music for All Occasions," won a Grammy for Best Country Song.
