Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and John Petrucci to mount G3 Tour
Joe Satriani and Steve Vai will revive their periodic G3 tour--so named for its roster of three guitar virtuosos--for a month-long outing that will begin in late June. The tour's latest incarnation will also feature Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci.
Each guitarist is scheduled to perform a full set backed by his own respective band. Vai's band will feature noted bassist Billy Sheehan, Vai's former bandmate in David Lee Roth's first post-Van Halen outfit.
Satriani--a former guitar teacher who schooled Vai, Metallica's Kirk Hammett and Primus' Larry LaLonde--is scheduled to release "Live in San Francisco" (Epic) on June 19. Vai's forthcoming "Alive in the Real World" (Epic) is set for release on that same date.
Petrucci's latest--also a live set--is last December's "An Evening With John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess." Dream Theater, meanwhile, began recording its next album in March, according to Petrucci's official website.
In addition to G3 regulars Satriani and Vai, previous incarnations of the G3 tour have featured fellow guitar virtuosos Eric Johnson and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The 1996 outing spawned the 1997 album "G3 Live and In Concert," which featured three tracks apiece from Satriani, Vai and Johnson, as well as three tracks that featured all three guitarists jamming together.
