Indigenous headlines U.S. tour, opens for Jonny Lang
Blues band Indigenous--really the only band from South Dakota ever to receive national attention--returns to the road on Wednesday (2/21). In addition to headlining clubs and theaters, the band will open several spring dates for Jonny Lang.
Indigenous also will play two shows at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, one of which will support Dr. John.
Led by acclaimed guitarist Mato Nanji, Indigenous has a blues-rock sound that has made it one of the few young bands to get played on classic rock radio--comparisons of Nanji's guitar work to that of Stevie Ray Vaughan's abound in the press. Nanji is joined in the band by two siblings and a cousin, with whom he grew up on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
According to the band's website, Nanji joined Carlos Santana on stage in Albuquerque last October to perform Bob Marley's "Exodus" and "Get Up, Stand Up."
Indigenous' most recent release is "Circle" (Pachyderm), produced by Doyle Bramhall (Stevie Ray Vaughan), and released last May.
