Jonny Lang band member Doug Nelson killed in accident
Doug Nelson, bassist for blues singer-guitarist Jonny Lang's band, was killed early Tuesday (11/7) when he was struck by a pickup truck while apparently walking on a rural highway in northern Minnesota, according to a Minneapolis Star Tribune report. Lang's management confirmed the details of the report for SoundSpike on Thursday (11/9). Nelson was 46 years old.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Nelson was reportedly walking home on Hwy. 65 near McGregor, Minn., after watching "Monday Night Football" at a local restaurant. A state patrol report indicates that a 28-year-old man driving a pickup truck on the highway saw Nelson waving his arms, attempted to stop and swerve, but ultimately struck Nelson, who reportedly died at the scene of the incident.
Nelson signed on with Lang's band about three years ago. He had previously toured with artists such as Olivia Newton-John, Lamont Cranston, This Oneness, Class Action and Dr. Mambo's Combo.
Lang's management has indicated that the singer-guitarist is waiting to speak to Nelson's parents before publicly commenting on the bassist's death, the Star Tribune reported.
Nelson's memorial service is set to take place on Sunday (11/12). A memorial fund has been set up in his name. More information can be found at Lang's official website.
