Tom Waits, Robert Wilson collaborate on "Woyzeck"

Tom Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan, in collaboration with avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson, will unveil a new musical production of the nearly 200-year-old Georg Buchner play "Woyzeck" later this month, according to Waits' publicist.

The collaboration marks the third by Waits and Wilson. They previously worked together on "The Black Rider" (with William S. Burroughs) and "Alice," both of which were staged in Europe in the '90s.

"Woyzeck," which is described as "a fragmented, nightmarish fable based upon a true story of a soldier who murdered his girlfriend in Leipzig, Germany in 1821," will premiere on Nov. 19 at the Betty Nansen Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark.

"In the music for Woyzeck, some of the instruments are tuned hand bells, cello, upright bass, waterphone, bass clarinet, trombone, log drum, experimental percussion, toy piano, guitarophone, pump organ and banjo," Waits said in a statement. "It's music for the subconscious. Scary, horror, lullabies, ["Threepenny Opera" composer Kurt] Weill-ish theatrical, carousel suspense, chanson, vaudeville distorted, parlor songs, broken mirror music. All the songs, music and lyrics were composed by myself and my collaborator, Kathleen Brennan."
