Pat Metheny to set out behind 'Orchestrion'

Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny will spend two months on the road next spring behind his forthcoming January release, "Orchestrion."

The extensive North American road trip kicks off April 6 in Morgantown, WV, and crisscrosses the nation, stopping by theaters in 36 cities by tour's end. One Canadian show--May 1 in Vancouver--is also on the books. The musician will wrap up the outing with a May 21 concert in New York City. Details are below.

"Orchestrion," Metheny's latest project, will be his first collection of new material since last year's "Day Trip." The forthcoming set is slated to hit shelves Jan. 26.

The new effort, which features Metheny as the only musician, will showcase a new concept the performer has dubbed orchestrionics.

"Orchestrionics is the term that I am using to describe a new performance method to present music alone onstage using acoustic and acousto-electric musical instruments that are mechanically controlled using the power of technology," Metheny explained about the work at his website.

Though this run will feature Metheny solo, he does acknowledge on his website that he'll continue to play in other formats, including with the Pat Metheny Group, in the future.
