Sublime reforms for SoCal Smokeout
Following a six year hiatus, Cypress Hill's music and marijuana-culture festival, Smokeout, is making a big return with a newly reformed Sublime as its very special guests, according to the event website.
Sublime ceased to exist 13 years ago after lead singer Bradley Nowell died of a drug overdose. The band's music continued to grow in popularity, but surviving members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson never indicated a desire to replace Nowell. Earlier this year, however, Gaugh and Wilson--who had gone on to form the Long Beach Dub All Stars--played a gig with Northern California-based singer Rome and later reportedly referred to the show as a Sublime reunion.
Now, Gaugh, Wilson and Rome will officially perform as a reformed Sublime as part of the Smokeout Festival to be held Oct. 23-24 at the San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, CA.
The festival, which was launched by Cypress Hill in 1998 partially as a means to raise awareness of the cannabis counter-culture, also will feature performances by two reunited hip hop acts: Goodie Mob, featuring Gnarls Barkley star Cee-Lo Green, and Geto Boys. Both acts will feature all of the original members.
In addition to festival founders Cypress Hill, "The All Day Mind Opening Music Festival" will feature Slipknot, Deftones, Pennywise, Method Man & Redman, and Kottonmouth Kings. Rounding out the lineup will be Bad Brains, Immortal Technique, Hieroglyphics, Living Legends and many others.
In addition to music, this year's festival will feature its own Smokeout Cannabis Cup and Medical Marijuana Expo, 420 Movie Night, glass-art showcase, cannabis education, legal workshops, growing tips, "massive munchie gardens" and a vendor village. The two-day event, hosted by Cheech and Chong, also will feature guest speakers, celebrity appearances, surprise performances and an infamous V.I.P. (Very Important Pot-smoker) private party, according to a press release.
Ticket pre-sales begin Sept. 4. General-public tickets will be available beginning Sept. 12.
