U.S. club jaunt planned by Elliott Smith, Grandaddy

Critical favorite Elliott Smith, who is currently on the road in Europe, will bring his world tour to the United States in mid-October. Modesto, Calif.-based indie rock outfit Grandaddy has been tapped to support on the American leg of the jaunt.

The singer-songwriter's tour will hit the U.K. club circuit in early October. A December tour of Japan will follow the U.S. leg.

Smith is supporting his second major label album, "Figure 8" (Dreamworks), which was released in April. Despite positive reviews, the album peaked at No. 99 on the Billboard 200 album chart in May.

The Portland, Ore., native caught on with a mainstream audience after his song "Miss Misery," on the "Good Will Hunting" soundtrack, earned an Oscar nomination in 1998's Best Song category. He released three albums on independent labels before latching on with Dreamworks for his 1998 major label debut "XO."
