Bryan Adams to play free peace concert in Georgia

Bryan Adams will play a free concert Sept. 19 at Rikhe Square in Tbilsi, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Georgia.

The concert, dubbed "Peace, Freedom and Democracy for Georgia," comes 40 days after the first loss of life in Georgia's recent conflict with Russia, which is significant for the country's predominantly Orthodox Christian population who believe a person's soul continues its journey to heaven 40 days after death, according to a press release.

Adams, who has performed for several causes and organizations including Amnesty International and the Concert to Free Nelson Mandella, has shown his support to several countries following periods of unrest, including Vietnam, Pakistan, Jordan and Sri Lanka.

The Georgian concert will be followed two days later by the "Peace One Day" show in London. Since 2001, "Peace One Day," spearheaded by Annie Lennox, has been an annual initiative to make Sept. 21 a global cease fire.

According to a statement, Adams hopes his symbolic gesture of peace will inspire leaders to consider alternatives to conflict resolution.
