The Beatles U.S. Album Sales Total Tops 113 Million

More than four decades after the band's formation, the Beatles continue to add on to their collection of multi-platinum honors. The Recording Industry Association of America's (RIAA) July certifications included upgrades of six Beatles titles, which brought the band's total U.S. sales to a 113.5 million units.

Leading the pack was " The Beatles" (the two-record set best known as "The White Album"), which has been certified for 18 million albums sold. Other upgrades went to "The Beatles 1962-1966" and "The Beatles 1967-1970" (14 million and 15 million, respectively), "Magical Mystery Tour" (6 million), "Revolver" (5 million) and "Love Songs" (3 million).

Sting's 1999 release "Brand New Day," which picked up a Grammy in the Best Pop Album category, was certified double platinum in July, bringing his certified sales as a solo artist to 14 million. That surpasses the combined sales of all albums by the Police.

Santana's Grammy-dominating "Supernatural" album was certified for sales of 13 million, while Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" hit 12 million.

Three albums were certified at the nine-million level in July: Will Smith's "Big Willie Style," the motion picture soundtrack "Top Gun" and Kid Rock's "Devil Without a Cause." Kid Rock's "The History of Rock" has been certified double platinum.

Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes picked up their first platinum certification for the 1975 album "Wake Up Everybody." Also picking up their first platinum honors were Papa Roach ("Infest") and Vertical Horizon ("Everything You Want").

In all, the RIAA awarded 21 multi-platinum, 18 platinum and 23 gold albums in July. A complete list of all awards for the month is available at the RIAA's website.
