Album Review: M. Ward, "Post War" (Merge)
M. Ward's delicate and brittle compositions wrap themselves around their audience a little at a time. Slowly, in hushed tones, they only truly reveal themselves with each subsequent listen.
Keeping apace with 2005's achingly good "Transistor Radio," Ward and his road-weary and worn voice return on this, his fifth LP, "Post War." Adding to the long-player's charm is expanded instrumentation and a bevy of guests ranging from Neko Case and frequent touring companion Jim James of My Morning Jacket.
The songs range from the quiet, lo-fi stylings of his past, and the new rocked-up arrangements that began taking shape on subsequent tours. "Post War," like it's predecessor, possesses a timeless quality that makes it the most absorbing and compelling of of Ward's albums to date. This may just be the perfect soundtrack companion to your autumn.
