In Pictures: Gogol Bordello in Oakland, CA

As SoundSpike contributor Roy El Saghir wrote in a recent live review, Gogol Bordello is "not your average Russo, Ukrainian, Romany, Jewish, Polish, Latvian, Ethiopian, Chinese, Thai, Ecuadorian, Italian, Swedish, Caribbean and Spanish band."

Frontman Eugene Hutz is on a mission to spread the joy of gypsy-punk one concert at a time -- and although the group covers a lot of ground, it seems to maintain awareness that each audience is new, much like a theater troupe. That's fitting, since Gogol Bordello's shtick is to be quite theatrical on stage. Hutz regularly splashes red wine over moshing fans and jumps around like a circus entertainer as he's flanked by pretty girls doing acrobatics.

Gogol Bordello is currently on the road behind the new album "Tran-Continental Hustle," produced by Rick Rubin on American Recordings. Tonight (10/15) Hutz and co. will be at the Senator Theatre in Chico, CA, and Sunday (10/17) they hit up the McDonald Theatre in Eugene, OR. SoundSpike contributing photographer Anna Hiatt attended their show at The Fox Theater in Oakland, CA, last night (10/14) and here are some highlights.
