The xx lands Mercury Prize

London-based electronic trio the xx have won this year's Mercury Prize -- and a check for 20,000 pounds (about $30,700) -- for their self-titled debut album. The award -- which typically leads to increased sales in the U.K. and Ireland -- aims to commemorate the best album released in those countries during the previous 12 months.
Paul Weller, Corinne Bailey Rae and Dizzee Rascal were among the 11 other shortlisted acts in the running for the prize, which was awarded during a Tuesday (9/7) ceremony in London.
Among the award's previous winners are Franz Ferdinand, PJ Harvey, Pulp and Arctic Monkeys.
The xx opens a North American tour Sept. 22 in Los Angeles.
