Merle Haggard takes the Bakersfield sound to the Midwest, South
Casinos in the South and Midwest are where you will find Merle Haggard over the next six months as he continues to tour in support of his Vanguard release "I Am What I Am."
His first album in three years, "I Am" hit No. 18 on the country album chart in April, his highest chart position since 1987.
Haggard, one of the creators of the Bakersfield Sound, has hit No. 1 on the country singles chart 38 times. Those songs, among them "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive," "Mama Tried" and "You Take Me For Granted," earned him a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Not bad for a man who decided to become a country musician after watching Johnny Cash perform at San Quentin, where he was incarcerated.
