Rave promoter sues Los Angeles over cancellation
A concert canceled by the city of Los Angeles has led a promoter to file a lawsuit seeking more than $1 million from the city, the Los Angeles Times reported in its Tuesday (8/31) edition.
Insomniac Inc., a dance promoter based in Los Angeles, scheduled an Oct. 30 concert featuring Tiesto at the Los Angeles Convention Center that the city canceled in the wake of Insomniac's Electric Daisy Carnival at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, where a teenager died.
Insomiac claims the city had no proper cause to cancel the Tiesto concert. According to the complaint, the city cited the girl's death and patrons' use of the drug Ecstasy at Electric Daisy as reasons to not allow the show to proceed.
The promoter countered that the Tiesto show was being singled out as a rave-type show while other concerts and sporting events with similar issues have been allowed to proceed.
The Times reported that Insomniac is requesting a reimbursement of production costs ($668,750) and loss of profit ($436,250).
Insomniac promoted five Tiesto shows in and around Los Angeles in 2008 and 2009.
