Deftones bassist Chi Cheng dead at 42
Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has died, more than four years after he suffered major injuries in a car accident. He was 42 years old.
According to a post by Cheng's mother, Jeanne Marie Cheng, on the One Love For Chi website, he was taken to an emergency room at about 3 a.m. on Saturday (4/13) when his heart failed.
"He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear," his mother wrote. "He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone."
On Nov. 4, 2008, Cheng was ejected from a car that was involved in a head-on collision in Santa Clara, CA. He suffered major head trauma in the accident, and was in a coma for an extended period before he showed slow signs of recovery.
At the time of his death, he had been continuing his recovery at home after years in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. Since the accident, however, he apparently never advanced to more than a semi-conscious state.
In addition to his mother, Cheng is also survived by a son, Gabriel.
A candlelight vigil in Cheng's honor drew about 150 people to Sacramento, CA's Cesar Chavez Plaza on Sunday night (4/14), the Deftones' hometown. Cheng was a native of the nearby city of Davis.
Deftones tapped Sergio Vega of quicksand to take over on bass after Cheng's accident.
