Stone Temple Pilots give Scott Weiland the boot

Alt-rock icons Stone Temple Pilots announced the termination of frontman Scott Weiland in a one-sentence press release this morning (2/27).

The simply-stated announcement came one day after Weiland, co-founder of the San Diego-based group, denied rumors of his dismissal to Rolling Stone.

"STP has not broken up," he told the magazine. "I haven't quit. I haven't been fired. We're talking right now about when we want to tour next."

Weiland is preparing for a solo trek entitled "Purple At The Core Tour" during which he'll perform songs from STP's first two albums -- 1992's "Core" and the 1994 follow-up "Purple" -- as well as tracks from his time with Velvet Revolver and his own solo material.

Weiland released a statement this afternoon (2/27), stating:

"I learned of my supposed 'termination' from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out."
