What you see is what you get with former "X-Factor" contestant Rachel Crow.

During a recent phone interview with SoundSpike, the 14-year-old was cute, bubbly and especially enthusiastic about her music career, which began with her Motown-influenced run on the Simon Cowell-helmed show.

After being mentored by Cowell, Crow grew into her own artist. She has blossomed since she released her self-titled debut EP in June on Sony Music's Columbia Records in partnership with Cowell's label Syco. She is showing off her talents nightly as the opening act for Big Time Rush's summer tour.

"It's what I expected and way more," Crow said about the jaunt. "It's kind of amazing. I just think that the fans are so amazing and important."

She said the response to her music has been, well, "amazing." Fans seem to grasp her tune "Mean Girls," a song about bullying she co-wrote with Toby Gad.

"It's very important to me because I feel, not just for myself but for other people, it's really hard these days with bullying," Crow said. "I wanted to try to write something so fans could relate to me. So they knew that it happened to me as well."

The overwhelming response to "Mean Girls," as well as some of her other tracks, has moved her as well.

"I love to sing 'Mean Girls' live," Crow said. "It's a song that I think everybody loves. There's another song on the EP called 'What a Song Can Do.' Everybody interacts with me and they wave their hands. Being in my position, I can see everybody waving their hands, whereas if I was in the audience watching someone, I wouldn't be able to see behind me. Being able to look out and see the crowd just waving their arms is just amazing."

Crow is truly proud of the collection and her forthcoming full-length album, which she will finish recording later this year. But she said songwriting is a challenge.

"In all honesty, it is so difficult," she said with a sight. "You have to come up with the perfect words. You have to make it sound like almost sophisticated but fun. You don't want to sound like you're not very smart. That's the hard thing. The other thing that's real easy about it is it is what you love. You know everything's all good. If you mess up with one word and you're reading through, you go, 'Oh, no.' But you can change it, which is great. What I like to do is erase words, put them in and then look at them. I try again until I find the perfect word."

She's also a perfectionist when it comes to her acting skills. She's appearing in Nickelodeon's "Fred: The Show" and is preparing to film the pilot to her own show once the tour is over.

In the meantime, she's enjoying her run on the road.

"I do get to do a lot of things," she said. "I like to roam around the venue with my parents and stuff. I play with Cody [Simpson, opener] a lot. We hang out quite a bit, which is fun. On my off days, we love to go to movies, so we'll do that as a family thing. We have a tour family kind of thing, so we all go and hang out. We'll go to the mall and stuff."
