Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel says he is transgendered
Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel reveals he is transgendered in a recent Rolling Stone interview, and will eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace.
The 31-year-old singer, songwriter and guitarist came out as transgendered in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine; the issue hits newsstands Friday (5/11). The musician explains how he has dealt with gender dysphoria for years and has decided to undergo the transition process, taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments. He is also considering gender reassignment surgery, according to TMZ.com.
Gabel, who says he is not attracted to men, will remain committed to his wife and their two-year-old daughter.
"For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," Gabel told Rolling Stone. "But she's been super amazing and understanding."
Gabel also explained his reasoning for doing the interview with the popular music magazine.
"I'm going to have embarrassing moments and that won't be fun," the musician said. "But that's part of what talking to you is about -- is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."
In the full Rolling Stone interview, Gabel also discusses what his gender change will mean for the future of Against Me!, which is currently preparing to open for The Cult's U.S. tour beginning later this month and running through late June.
