When Theory of a Deadman frontman/lead guitarist Tyler Connolly leaves the music industry behind, he would like nothing more than to hear his songs on classic rock radio stations.

"We're not one of those bands people come see because we have a cult following or because we wear a bunch of make up or something," Connolly told SoundSpike.

"It's a song thing, which is great being a songwriter. I love the fact that my songs are on the radio and people sing along. It's great. It's something that when I'm retired, old and gray, they'll still be playing 'Bad Girlfriend' on classic rock or something. That'll be awesome. I love touring, but for me it's about writing songs."

Connolly and Theory of a Deadman have earned fans with their honest and direct lyrics, coupled by soaring pop melodies. For example, in the latest single "Hurricane," Connolly compares a broken romance to a disaster: "And now we're standing in the eye of the storm and everything is gone, nothing remains/I'm caught in a hurricane, I'm leaving here dead or alive."

"I'm glad we got to 'Hurricane,'" he said. "You have to be careful with your career and song choices. I look at some bands who have tongue-in-cheek songs and sometimes I think 'Hurricane' is a bit of a departure from the singles like 'Bitch Came Back' and 'Lowlife.' It's nice because it's a rock single, but it's different. It's done really well for us. I think it's because it's different than the singles we recently released. I'm glad it got a shot. I'm glad it's doing really well."

"Hurricane" marks the fourth single off of Theory of a Deadman's latest album, "The Truth Is ..." Besides the aforementioned "Bitch Came Back" and "Lowlife," the other single is the relentlessly catchy "Out of My Head."

Connolly adores the songwriting process, which he shared on "The Truth Is..." with ex-wife Christine, former "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi and others.

"I write a lot with my ex-wife Christine, who is a great songwriter," Connolly gushed. "She actually has a record coming out that I wrote quite a few tracks on. I like writing with her because it's so fricking easy. The songs we write usually end up becoming singles. I co-wrote 'Bad Girlfriend' with her. 'I Hate My Life,' 'Lowlife.' Those were all big hits for us. I enjoy writing with her because it seems like the songs we come up always turn out to be hits. It's exciting."

The British Columbia native feels uncomfortable writing with people he doesn't know, however. He likens it to a blind date.

"There are people who go through the circuit and will actually fly somewhere and go see random people," Connolly said. "I find that it ends up just being terrible. You try to be pleasant, but when you leave, hopefully I never have to talk to that person again. I don't know. I try to work with people I've worked with before. I love the process."

Connolly and his bandmates -- rhythm guitarist Dave Brenner, bassist Dean Back and drummer Joey Dandeneau -- are pushing Theory of a Deadman's songs on tour with Pop Evil and Stellar Revival. The band plans on being on the road through the fall.

"I love being busy, and the fact that we don't have to think about the next record yet is exciting because it means there's more work to be done on this one," Connolly said. "They longer you can be on one record cycle, it means that people are obviously digging it."
