Taylor Swift invites cancer patient to country awards show
She turned him down for the prom, so now Taylor Swift is trying to make it up to Kevin McGuire by inviting him to be her date for this year's Academy of Country Music Awards.
"Obviously I said yes," the 18-year-old leukemia sufferer told the Philadelphia Enquirer."The ACM Awards is a lot better than the senior prom." McGuire said he plans to fly to Las Vegas for the awards show, which is set for April 1.
McGuire's sister Victoria had started a Facebook campaign which attracted 90,000 supporters to convince the music star to come to his prom after her brother had suffered a relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a condition that has currently left him hospitalized at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
"Kevin I'm so sorry but I won't be able to make it to your prom," Swift responded on Facebook to the request on behalf of her brother. "But I was wondering, the ACM Awards are coming up. Would you be my date?"
McGuire, who has suffered from the disease since he was 13, had beaten the cancer into remission in April 2010 only to see it return recently. The Somerdale, NJ, native had maintained his status as a varsity football player throughout his treatment and was hopeful on enjoying a normal senior year in high school before the relapse.
Swift found out about McGuire's campaign through her record label, according to the local Fox News affiliate, which brought the teen''s plea to the record company's attention.
"I don't know what else to say! I was just trying not to throw up," McGuire told the Philadelphia TV station.
"I have cancer. Cancer doesn't have me," McGuire added. "Taylor, I would love to go with you."
