The Cars reunion speculation ignited by Facebook photo

Seminal New Wavers The Cars, who issued their last album in 1987 and officially broke up the following year, could be pondering a comeback.

Earlier this month, a photo surfaced on Facebook that shows the band's four surviving members -- frontman Ric Ocasek, guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes and drummer David Robinson -- jamming in a studio. (The band's fifth member, bassist/vocalist Benjamin Orr, died in 2000 of pancreatic cancer.)

According to various reports, the photo at first included the caption, "Anyone in the mood for a reunion by The Cars?" The caption was later removed.

So far, the only recent comment from a band member comes from Hawkes, who told the Boston Globe last week, "I hate to be vague, but I really can't say. It's a crazy world."

Ocasek, who is a successful producer, has been the band's lone holdout in the past. Todd Rundgren and the band's other members toured as The New Cars in 2006, and also released an album.
