Who will fill the substantial hole left in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band by the death last year of saxman Clarence Clemons? Southside Johnny seems to know.

"He's stealing my saxophone players to replace Clarence, so we steal from each others' bands occasionally," Southside Johnny said, referring to his Asbury Jukes brass section, in an interview with Ontario, Canada's Kitchener-Waterloo Record.

According to the Springsteen fan site Backstreets.com, Springsteen has twice before toured extensively with a horn section: on 1988's Tunnel of Love Express tour, and on 2006's Sessions Band tour. Both of those lineups included Eddie "Kingfish" Manion on sax; the other sax player in the current Jukes' lineup is Joey Stann.

Springsteen's camp hasn't officially confirmed who'll be playing sax on his upcoming tour, if anyone.

In his interview with The Record, Southside Johnny reflected on a relationship with Springsteen that dates back to 1967 or 1968. E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zant was Southside's roommate, bandmate and songwriting partner before he joined Springsteen's group.

"[Springsteen] just had that presence where you couldn't take your eyes off him," Southside Johnny said. "He had long hair, a great grin and chicks just loved the s*** out of him. He had a gold top Les Paul, and he wrote songs and sang and put together bands and was a great guy to know."

The Boss and crew will kick off the U.S. portion of their upcoming tour with a March 18 performance in Atlanta, followed by 16 more major-market arena shows. Another round of shows is expected this fall, following a European tour.

A new Springsteen album titled "Wrecking Ball" is due out on March 6.
