Garth Brooks has revealed the city that will launch his world tour while confirming the final cancellation of the five Irish shows that were to preview his staging and sound systems in late July.

The tour will officially launch in Chicago, though no firm time frame has been set. Brooks made good on his promise to a boy named Andy Roberts, who asked him at one of his final performances in Las Vegas in January where his eventual tour would start.

Brooks told Roberts that he'd call him when there was something to announce so he'd be the first to know. That call happened earlier today (7/14).

Given that Brooks would down his touring and recording career in 2001 and has played just a few special one-city stands since then and hasn't played in Chicago since 1997, speculation points to a stadium to handle ticket demand unless he sees a multi-night arena stay as a better fit for the production he has in mind.

The rollout of more specific information about the Chicago show(s) and the rest of the tour, as well as the rollout of Brooks' digital catalogue on his website will take place over the following days and weeks.

As those doors open, the door to a planned five-night "Comeback Special" event at Ireland's 80,000-capacity Croke Park stadium slammed shut as Brooks issued a press statement that said that local city officials refused to back away from their earlier ruling that Brooks would only be allowed to play three of his five shows and would need to pick two to cancel.

Brooks had earlier stated that all five shows needed to happen or he wouldn't perform at all, at which point the shows were announced as cancelled. But at a press conference last week, Brooks indicated that until ticket refunds began, he'd continue to try and find a way to make the shows happen. Over the weekend, Ticketmaster in Ireland had announced that they would delay the start of refund to give Brooks and local officials more time to negotiate, but those negotiations came up empty.

in part, his statement read, "To say I am crushed is an understatement. All I see is my mother's face and I hear her voice. She always said things happen for a reason and for the right reason. As hard as I try, I cannot see the light on this one. So it is with a broken heart, I announce the ticket refunds for the event will go as posted by Ticketmaster."
