Updated: Accident kills 2, injures 23 outside SXSW venue
SXSW Music festivalgoers were rattled early Thursday by word of a horrific accident outside one of the festival's popular venues that left two people dead and at least 23 transported to area hospitals with a range of injuries, some critical.
The accident happened about 12:30am Thursday outside the Mohawk club near Red River and 10th street as X was finishing their set, according to a tweet from Old '97s frontman Rhett Miller.
I'm witnessing one of the darkest things I've ever seen right now. Tragedy at SXSW. Outside the X show at Mohawk.— Rhett Miller (@rhettmiller) March 13, 2014
Tyler, The Creator was scheduled to perform the final set on the House Of Vans showcase at the venue, and fans were lining up to prepare to enter the venue for that show. He cancelled his performance upon learning of the incident.

The combination of a show ending and next show preparing to start maximized the number of people in front of the venue, and police had swept through and moved many of them from the street to the sidewalk just prior to the crash, according to Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo.
The driver had been trying to evade police after being pursued on suspicion of DWI. The two fatalities were reportedly the driver and passenger of a moped that the driver hit prior to reaching the venue.
He was headed the wrong way down an adjoining street and turned down Red River, then drove through the barricades placed near the venue to prevent traffic from flowing directly in front of the cluster of clubs on the street.
After hitting the pedestrians in front of the Mohawk, the driver jumped out of the car and tried to flee on foot, but was quickly caught by nearby foot patrol officers and taken into custody, said Acevedo.
The driver, whose name was not released, faces two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.
