The venerable Forum south of downtown Los Angeles showed off a crisp new suit of clothes on Wednesday (1/15) as its opening month tenants the Eagles likewise buffed up a new shine on their storied set.

On the venue side of things, the building, now operating under Madison Square Garden ownership, vows to stage just music--no sports, no ice shows, no circuses. And all looks shiny and new outside and in.

Tickets are checked out on the walkway ramps, leaving the outdoor concourse as a place to take a drink, wolf down a concession snack or have a conversation away from the din inside. One amenity that isn't part of the refresh is deeper rows, but without blowing out and rebuilding massive amount of concrete, that's just not possible with the old bones of the room.

The buzzworthy accomplishment of the venue rehab, beyond the crisp visuals at every turn, is a lush sound system that hosted the gentle, lower-decibel offerings of the Eagles with nary a hiccup. The house mix seemed to temporarily lose a couple of Joe Walsh guitar breaks, but the system was impeccable.

At roughly 8:25, Don Henley and Glenn Frey took the stage with a pair of acoustic guitars and launched into the 1973 gem, "Saturday Night," from the "Desperado" album.

What followed was a Storytellers-style chronology of the band's formation and recorded output, with early member Bernie Leadon later joined by Joe Walsh fleshing out guitar duties during the first set, with a nod to the missing Randy Meisner.

After a brief intermission, Bernie was gone and the outstanding Stuart Smith picked up the Don Felder side of the guitar baton. Leadon returned during the encore to crank up the twang for Take It Easy.

Given the evolution--or some might say non-evolution--of Eagles live offerings since the Hell Freezes Over tour in 1994, it was inspiring to see some deeper cuts make their way to the stage. Gone are the forays into Henley and Frey solo projects. In play are the likes of "Doolin Dalton," "Pretty Maids All In A Row," "Already Gone," "Those Shoes" and "Train Leaves Here This Morning."

Amid the Eagles standard of rich harmonies and nuanced, technically perfect reproductions of the words and music of their lauded recordings, the new show pulls back the curtain and allows some heart into the mix.
