Metallica make history with Antarctica performance
Following a performance Sunday (12/8) in Antarctica, Metallica has become the first and only band in history to perform on all seven continents over the course of a calendar year.
The heavy-metal icons -- the first foreign act to play on the continent -- staged a "Freeze 'Em All in Antarctica" gig at a site near the heliport at Carlini Argentine Base. Instead of using amplifiers, the award-winning musicians broadcast the audio to the audience via headphones.
Contest winners from five Latin American countries made of the audience, after which the group participated in an expedition to see surrounding sites. Video of the event is streaming at the band's YouTube channel.
Metallica is preparing for the impending Jan. 28 release of their 3D feature film, "Metallica Through The Never." The rockers also have their summer plotted out, with a sweep of European festival appearances already on the books.
