Filter's Radtke talks "The Sun Comes Out Tonight"
When the chemistry is right, it's undeniable. That was the case for Filter frontman Richard Patrick and guitarist Jonathan Radtke, who joined the band three years ago.
"When I started playing with Filter a couple years ago, Rich and I had the idea to get together off tour and work on material," Radtke said via telephone from Chicago, when he was doing a day's worth of press.
"It just kind of worked. It felt effortless. When you pair up with another songwriter and you come up with that kind of material so easily, you can't deny it."
Patrick and Radtke decided to write an entire record together. The result is "The Sun Comes Out Tonight," which was released June 4 on Wind-up Records.
"On certain songs, specifically 'Surprise,' I came up with a riff and we went back and forth," Radtke said. "The next day, Rich came back with these amazing lyrics and this beautiful melody.
"Basically, the song just wrote itself. We had a lot of moments like that on this album. I'm thankful for that. It makes the work that much easier when you have someone who shares the same direction, has similar interests, knows where you want to go. When you have that partner that shares the same feeling it just makes everything that much easier."
The album's first single is the sing-along-worthy "What Do You Say." Radtke said the goal was to make a hook-laden song that would go over well live.
"We wanted to write something that would stick in your head after the first listen," he said. "We wanted something -- for lack of a better word -- anthemic. The audience could chant with us. It's aggressive and it's moody and everything that we are.
"It's got the unique Filter sound but it's updated. There's a lot of heavy programming on this record. We both come from that world. Obviously, Rich being in Nine Inch Nails and being part of that family, and me with Kill Hannah and stuff. We love synths and programming. That's our world. We're kind of incorporating that into this new record."
Fans can expect to hear new and old material on Filter's current run with the "Summerland" tour with Everclear, Live and Sponge.
"We'll obviously be playing the stuff that Filter's known for," Radtke said. "We'll bring the old hits and the new stuff, too. It'll be something for everyone. Old fans will love it. New fans will love it. We love playing songs like 'Hey Man, Nice Shot' and 'Take a Picture.' Those songs made the band. It's part of who we are. We love to see people rocking out, smiling, angry, whatever they are. We like the crowd reaction."
