Stone Temple Pilots made an unexpected appearance Saturday (5/18) at the KROQ Weenie Roast in Los Angeles, joining Linkin Park's Chester Bennington for a full 40-minute set.

The surprise performance also stood as the announcement that Bennington signed on to handle vocal duties for the rock heavyweights' latest single, taking the place of recently ousted Scott Weiland.

Bennington and the rest of STP made their way through hits such as "Vasoline" and "Sex Type Thing," as well as their first collaboration with the new singer entitled "Out of Time."

"Chester has a one-of-a-kind voice that we've admired for a long time," STP's Dean DeLeo said in a statement. "We know Linkin Park will always be his priority, but we thought it would be cool to try something together. We managed to find the time to record a song and we're all really happy with the result."

"When the opportunity came up to do something creative with them, I jumped at the chance," Bennington said in a press release. "The guys in Linkin Park have been incredibly supportive of me undertaking this project while I've continued to work on new music with LP."

A free download of the new single is currently available at the band's website.
