Bruce Springsteen surprises with live set at Clarence Clemons tribute

An Asbury Park tribute concert honoring Clarence Clemons culminated in a 45-minute Bruce Springsteen set in front of 400 fans on Sunday night.

The evening, booked at the seaside town's Wonder Bar as "Tribute to the Late, Great Clarence Clemons," kicked off with a set by Clemons' son Nick Clemons' band, according to a published report in the New Jersey Star Ledger.

J.T. Bowen and the Soul Cruisers headlined the show. Bowen was the lead singer of Clemons' 80's band the Red Bank Rockers.

According to the Star Ledger report, the Soul Cruisers performed a set, and Bowen joined them for a second set. During that later set, Bowen performed "You're a Friend of Mine," the duet that Clemons recorded with Jackson Brown in 1985.

During that song, Springsteen reportedly made his way to the side of the stage to watch. Bowen later called him to the stage and he led the Soul Cruisers through a set that kicked off with a rarity of his own, the song "Action In The Streets," which he apparently last performed with the E Street Band in 1977.

What followed was "Savin' Up," a song he'd written that Clemons recorded and performed in his Red Bank Rockers days. From there, it was a number of soul covers, including "Raise Your Hand," an encore staple during E Street Band shows in the 70's and 80's.
