Singer/songwriter Jason Reeves, who has penned tunes with the likes of Kara DioGuardi and Colbie Caillat, is thrilled to have a new single, "Sticks and Stones," available to fans.

"It's been a really long wait," said Reeves, who will release a new album, "The Lovesick," this summer. "I can't wait for the whole thing to be out."

"Sticks and Stones" has a bit of a different flavor for Reeves, who sticks with an acoustic rock format. The song carries a dance-pop feel and Reeves said he adores it.

"It came about completely organically and naturally -- even though it definitely sounds like a contrived, label-inspired pop song in the direction that I didn't necessarily plan on going in," Reeves said via telephone from his home in Nashville.

"It's very strange how this whole new album got written. I wrote the whole thing in Nashville for the most part, with three people who are really great writers. They just happen to be three of my closets friends. That song in particular was one of the very first songs I wrote with two of them -- Jordan Lawhead and Danelle Leverett. Jordan is a singer/songwriter that I met in L.A. about five years ago. Danelle is in a country band call the JaneDear Girls. I'm not sure when you put the three of us together, you come up with a dance/pop song. But that was literally the first song the three of us wrote together."

When the trio was writing the song, they weren't sure who was going to record it. Initially, Reeves thought maybe Shakira was a good fit.

"Once we demoed it and had the recording, I knew it was for me somehow. I just didn't want to let it go because, although it does sound different, it's still my voice and I guess my message and my words," he said.

"It's just a song for people who are feeling broken down or like they're about to be broken down. It's armor against that, or strength in the face of it. I was experiencing a lot of sort of pain in the moment that we wrote that song."

Reeves said "Sticks and Stones" epitomizes "The Lovesick."

"The thing I love about this record is none of the songs sound exactly like the others," he said. "'Sticks and Stones' is definitely the most drastically different. I think it's the most up tempo and energetic out of all the songs.

"But it's hard to describe what they are because each one is a different emotion; with each emotion comes a different tone. For example, it goes from all the way from what 'Sticks and Stones' is to a completely acoustic song, which is just acoustic guitar and piano and everything in between. I played with a lot of sounds on this album that I've never really experimented with and never planned on using before. I think it worked in a really cool way even though that's the case."

Reeves' writing credits include Caillat's "Bubbly" and "Realize," the latter of which he duets with the singer. He has also penned songs with a variety of other artists, including Australia's Delta Goodrem, Demi Lovato and "American Idol" contestant Didi Benami. One of his most recent collaborations was with the Fox-television show champion Kris Allen.

"I wrote a couple of really good songs with Kris Allen," he said."He's amazing. I'm really impressed with him. I hope he uses the songs. For me they're really exciting."
