In Pictures: Big Day Out in Sydney, Australia

Since 1992, Big Day Out has compelled Australians to mark their calendars for the pivotal music event of their Southern Hemisphere summer. This year, the touring festival kicked off Jan. 21 in neighboring Auckland, New Zealand.

Big Day Out arrived at Olympic Park in Sydney for two shows last week (1/26-27), offering up no fewer than 89 bands performing on two main stages, two quasi-main stages, plus three additional venues, as well as a huge rave tent featuring art installations, DJs and more.

The lineup included such names as Rammstein, LCD Soundsystem. M.I.A., Matt & Kim, Pnau, Andrew W.K., Deftones, Paul Dempsey, Lupe Fiasco, Angus & Julia Stone, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Sia, John Butler Trio, Die Antwoord, and Aussie native Nick Cave with his new band Grinderman, who closed out the show. SoundSpike contributing photographer David Erfle was on the scene and here are some of his best shots.
