Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong will return to Broadway on Jan. 1 to play the role of St. Jimmy in "American Idiot," the musical based on the Green Day album "21st Century Breakdown" and its B-sides. Armstrong is booked for 50 performances.

Armstrong made his Broadway debut in the role, playing St. Jimmy for a week -- Sept. 28-Oct. 3 -- that wound up saving the musical's Broadway run. His appearance generated sold-out houses; the week before he arrived, the theater was little more than half full.

Armstrong's performance schedule is Jan. 1-9, Jan. 18-30 and Feb. 10-27. Original Broadway cast member Tony Vincent will complete his run as St. Jimmy on Dec. 30.

"American Idiot" launched a promotional assault around the time of Armstrong's first appearance that included greatly reduced prices on seats at shows following the singer's run. The show continues to run a 40% off special through Dec. 12.
