Godmother of Punk Patti Smith will spend some time touring North America before year's end in support of her summertime release, "Banga."

The singer/songwriter, poet and activist will get started next week with an Oct. 8 performance in San Francisco. The U.S. leg includes six theater stops before moving across the pond for a handful of Spanish dates and a round of Japanese shows in January.

Smith will return stateside in late November to provide opening support for Neil Young and Crazy Horse at several East Coast arena shows.

Smith unveiled "Banga," her first album of new material since 2004's "Trampin'," in June via Columbia Records. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City and produced by Smith and her band—Tony Shanahan, Jay Dee Daugherty, and Smith's long-time collaborator, Lenny Kaye, the effort features special guests, including former Television frontman Tom Verlaine and Fab Faux-member Jack Petruzzelli, as well as Patti Smith's son, Jackson, and daughter, Jesse Paris.

Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, and in 2010, the musician received the National Book Award for her nonfiction release, "Just Kids," which chronicles her friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and their effect on each other as burgeoning artists in New York City.
