Dispatch's Pete Heimbold talks "Circles"
Dispatch bassist Pete Heimbold isn't quite sure why his band's latest album, "Circles Around the Sun," debuted at No. 24 on The Billboard 200 album chart, but he'll take it.
"It's a good question," Heimbold said when asked what touched so many people about this album. "I'm not so sure. I hope that they like the album. I like it. I'm proud of it. I think that there are songs that hopefully a lot of people would like. There are some ballads. There are some rockers. Hopefully it piques the interest of a lot of people."
The charting is the highest of the band's 16-year career, which was interrupted by a decade-long hiatus that ended in early 2011. The reunion, Heimbold said, was very organic.
"It was kind of like a mystery in a sense," Heimbold said. "We said, 'We've been working on other projects for awhile and it felt natural to get together again.' There wasn't really a specific event or conversation that just led to it. We talked about it. I think I had dinner with Chad [Urmston, singer/multi-instrumentalist]. We said, 'Why don't we try getting back together?' We did and it just felt good."
That feeling carried over into the songwriting process for "Circles Around the Sun," Heimbold said. With band members spread throughout the United States (Denver, Boston and New York City), Dispatch converged on Pete's NYC apartment.
"We had a bunch of songs and we just played song ideas to each other," he said. "It was a real natural exchange of ideas. Have you ever seen that Tom Petty documentary 'Running Down the Dream?' We watched that and that was such an awesome documentary."
Urmston was so inspired by the documentary that he wrote the new album's title track. Dispatch at first called the song "Tom Petty" because it felt like a Petty tune, Heimbold said.
"The other songs, some we brought parts in separately, and then we worked as a team and it was sort of like putting together a puzzle, and there were certain puzzle pieces that each guy had and we fit it together."
The group joyously celebrated when they finished writing the tunes.
"It was a really snowy night in New York and we were all hanging out. We all went out and ran in the snow afterward.
"Seriously, though, I love being with the guys. Brad [Corrigan, vocals/multi-instrumentalist] and Chad, it's great to join up with them and play some of these new songs on this record, 'Circles Around the Sun.'"
