Twenty-five years after his death, Elvis Presley’s reign as the King of Rock and Roll continues, as evidenced by his spot at the top of the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart.
“Elvis: 30 #1 Hits,” a best-of compilation of previously released tracks, sold more than half a million copies during its first week out, making it Presley’s first-ever No. 1 debut on the U.S. album chart, according to RCA Records. The album also debuted at No. 1 in 16 other countries, including Spain, Belgium, Argentina, New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Chile, Switzerland, Austria and the United Arab Emirates, the label announced.
Sales of the hits compilation were driven in part by the inclusion of a recent remix of Presley’s “A Little Less Conversation,” which topped the singles-sales chart in the U.S. earlier this year.
Presley’s posthumous, chart-topping performance leaves the Dixie Chicks’ “Home” at No. 2 and Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go” at No. 3,” followed by Disturbed’s “Believe,” down to No. 4 after debuting at No. 1 last week.
Nelly and Eminem continue to slowly lose ground, with “Nellyville” down one spot to No. 5 and “The Eminem Show” retreating two spots to No. 7.
Between the rappers is the No. 6 debut of India.Arie’s sophomore effort, “Voyage to India.” The album features the singer-songwriter’s latest single, “Little Things.”
The debut-heavy bottom of the Top 10 features Beck’s “Sea Change,” Peter Gabriel’s “Up” and Nas’ “The Lost Tapes,” which enter the chart at Nos. 8, 9 and 10, respectively.
Debuts outside the Top 10 include Pastor Troy’s “Universal Soldier” at No. 13, the “Brown Sugar” soundtrack at No. 18, Ryan Adams’ “Demolition” at No. 28, Uncle Kracker’s “No Stranger to Shame” at No. 43, Travis Tritt’s “Strong Enough” at No. 27, Jackson Browne’s “Naked Ride Home” at No. 36, Queen’s three-disc compilation “Greatest Hist I, II & III: The Platinum Collection” at No. 48, the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” soundtrack for the series’ “Once More With Feeling” musical episode at No. 49, Steve Earle’s “Jerusalem at No. 59, Chicago’s “The Very Best Of: Only the Beginning” at No. 63, UGK’s “Side Hustles” at No. 70, Tech N9ne’s “Absolute Power” at No. 79 and the “Sweet Home Alabama” soundtrack at No. 97.
Sinkers include Lifehouse’s “Stanley Climbfall,” which lands at No. 30 after debuting at No. 7 last week; Enrique Iglesias’ “Quizas,” which drops to No. 52 after debuting at No. 12; and John Mayer’s “Inside Wants Out,” a reissue of his 1999 debut EP, which freefalls to No. 86 after debuting at No. 22 last week.
