Gov’t Mule keeps busy this fall with the release of two new installments in its “Deep End” series and a tour that kicks off in early October.
Set for release on Oct. 8, “The Deep End, Volume 2” is the group’s second album to feature a lengthy roster of guest bassists, including Les Claypool (Primus), Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), Rocco Prestia, Alphonso Johnson, Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane), Chris Squire, Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Tony Levin, Billy Cox, George Porter Jr. (The Meters) and Me’Shell Ndegeocello.
The new album will be packaged with a bonus disc titled “Hidden Treasure Volume 2,” which includes “Drivin’ Rain"--featuring James Hetfield (Metallica) on vocals and Claypool on bass--as well as two previously unreleased live tracks, two DJ Logic Mule remixes, and “Weekend with Warren,” a short documentary about Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes.
The third installment of “The Deep End” series, titled “Rising Low,” is a documentary DVD that captures the making of the two “Deep End” albums. Phish bassist Mike Gordon directed the film, which is showing at this month’s http://www.woodstockfilmfestival.com/Schedule/docs2002.htm#RISING%20LOW >Woodstock Film Festival. Gov’t Mule gives a one-off performance at the event on Sept. 19.
The band’s official website is taking pre-orders for the new album and DVD.
Original Gov’t Mule bassist Allen Woody died in 2000. Surviving founders Haynes and drummer Matt Abts have continued on by recording and performing with guest bassists.
Guests on last year’s “The Deep End, Volume 1” include Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Bootsy Collins (James Brown, P-Funk), Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE), Mike Gordon (Phish), Jack Bruce (Cream) and the late John Entwistle (The Who).
