Album Chart: ‘8 Mile’ hangs on to No. 1 despite sales drop

The first week of the New Year brought with it a slump in sales, as all of the albums in the Top 10 experienced a single-week sales dip of about 50 to 60 percent.

The first week of the New Year brought with it a slump in sales, as all of the albums in the Top 10 experienced a single-week sales dip of about 50 to 60 percent.

Logging one-week sales of about 119,000 copies--down from about 313,000 the previous week--the “8 Mile” soundtrack narrowly manages to hang on to the top slot on the Billboard 200 album chart, according to industry sources. It is the album’s second consecutive week, and fifth overall, at No. 1.

Less than 1,000 copies behind is Norah Jones’ “Come Away with Me,” which, with a sales drop from about 218,000 copies to about 118,000, suffered the least bleeding among this week’s Top 10 entries.

Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go” continues to display its tenacity by spending its second consecutive week at No. 3, followed by the Dixie Chicks’ “Home,” which stays put at No. 4.

Christina Aguilera’s “Stripped” manages to pick up some ground despite sales that dropped from about 208,000 copies to about 95,000 copies; the album jumps three spots to No. 5.

Dropping one notch each are Jennifer Lopez’s “This Is Me ... Then,” down to No. 6, and Justin Timberlake’s “Justified” down to No. 7.

Shania Twain’s “Up!,” which dominated the chart’s top slot during its first five weeks of release, slides from No. 2 to No. 8 this week, followed by the late Aaliyah’s “I Care 4 U,” which is up one spot to No. 9.

Closing out the Top 10 is the “Now That’s What I Call Music! 11”; this hits compilation squeaks back into the Top 10 after dipping to No. 12 last week.

In addition to causing sales to flag, the mid-week New Year holiday kept labels from serving up any significant new releases, as evidenced by the lack of debuts on the forthcoming album chart.

Ubiquitous Canadian Avril Lavigne has announced her first batch of 2003 U.S. tour dates, LiveDaily reports. Admit it: just reading her name makes that damn song run through your head, doesn’t it?

The Tennessean reports that Gaylord Entertainment has axed the operations manager and several other staffers at Nashville’s WSM-AM radio, which is the famous home of the Grand Ole Opry radio show. A year ago, after the public raised a Big Ole Stink, Gaylord abandoned plans to change the station’s classic country music format.

Honestly: Can radio possibly become more mediocre?

Of course it can.

Eminem, Avril, Springsteen, others get Grammy nods

Ashanti, Sheryl Crow, Eminem, Norah Jones, Avril Lavigne, Nelly, Raphael Saadiq and Bruce Springsteen lead this year’s pack of Grammy nominees, with each artist scoring five nominations.

Ashanti, Sheryl Crow, Eminem, Norah Jones, Avril Lavigne, Nelly, Raphael Saadiq and Bruce Springsteen lead this year’s pack of Grammy nominees, with each artist scoring five nominations.

During a press conference held on Tuesday (1/7), the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 45th annual Grammy Awards ceremony, which is set to take place next month at Madison Square Garden.

Widely considered the ceremony’s most significant award category, the Album of the Year nominees feature Eminem’s “The Eminem Show” (which also was recently crowned 2002’s top-selling album), the Dixie Chicks’ “Home,” Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising,” Jones’ “Come Away With Me” and Nelly’s “Nellyville.”

Snagging Record of the Year nominations are Eminem’s “Without Me,” Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles,” Jones’ “Don’t Know Why,” Nelly’s “Dilemma” (featuring Kelly Rowland) and Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me.”

The teams facing off later this month at Super Bowl XXXVII have not yet been determined, but one thing that has been settled is that Shania Twain will sing during the game’s halftime show.

The game and halftime show, which are scheduled to take place on Sunday, Jan. 26, at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, will be televised live on ABC, and are expected to draw 130 million viewers in the U.S., and 800 million viewers worldwide, according to a press release.

Twain, one of country music’s most successful crossover artists, recently released her latest album, titled “Up!” The album sold a total of about 874,000 copies during its debut week, and spent its first five weeks of release at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, is one of two executive producers responsible for the halftime show. Though no other artists have yet been announced, the show typically features multiple acts from various musical genres.

‘The Eminem Show’ crowned 2002’s No. 1 album

Last year’s music-buyers bought more copies of Detroit rapper Eminem’s third album than any other release, and also made his “8 Mile” soundtrack the fifth top-selling album of the year.

Last year’s music-buyers bought more copies of Detroit rapper Eminem’s third album than any other release, and also made his “8 Mile” soundtrack the fifth top-selling album of the year.

“The Eminem Show,” which hit stores last May, sold a total of about 7.6 million copies by the end of 2002, according to year-end figures that Nielsen SoundScan--the organization that tracks point-of-purchase album sales--released on Thursday. That figure places the album millions of copies ahead of its competition.

Fellow rapper Nelly’s “Nellyville” sold almost 3 million fewer copies than “The Eminem Show"--about 4.9 million--but still manages to claim the No. 2 spot on the year-end sales chart. Following at No. 3 is Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go,” which moved about 4.1 million copies.

The Dixie Chicks’ “Home” racked up sales of about 3.7 million copies to land at No. 4, followed by the Eminem-dominated “8 Mile” soundtrack at No. 5 with sales of about 3.5 million copies.

Pink scored platinum with her sophomore release, “Missundaztood,” which moved about 3.1 million copies and snagged the No. 6 slot. Ashanti’s self-titled debut follows closely at No. 7 with a sales total of about 50,000 fewer copies.

Alan Jackson’s No. 8 top-seller, “Drive,” trails “Ashanti” by about 45,000 copies.

Closing out the Top 10 is Shania Twain’s “Up!,” which, despite a mid-November release, is still the year’s No. 9 best-selling album, with sales of about 2.9 million copies; and the “O Brother Where Art Thou?” soundtrack at No. 10 with sales of about 2.7 million copies. “O Brother"--a collection of blues, bluegrass, folk, country and gospel tunes used in the film--is the only album among 2002’s ten top-selling album that also graced the 2001 Top 10, on which it was the No. 9 best-selling album of the year.

Industry snapshot

Overall CD album-sales were down 8.7 percent from 2001, marking a second-consecutive-year decrease; sales during 2001 dipped about 3 percent from 2000’s year-end totals.

In raw numbers, that translates to total CD album-sales of about 649.5 million copies in 2002, versus about 712 million in 2001. The industry has tagged the blame on both a weak economy and the continued proliferation of online music piracy.

The industry did get some positive news on the Internet front, however; annual online album-sales rose to about 18.1 million copies for 2002, up from about 16.7 million copies in 2001.

Despite the overall sales drop, the country genre--which featured a number of post-Sept. 11, 2001, patriotically tinged releases by artists such as Alan Jackson and Toby Keith--experienced a sales increase of 12.2 percent over 2001.

As usual, the five major record labels accounted for about 84 percent of all album sales, with smaller labels accounting for the remainder.

The few souls who have yet to make the leap from cassette tapes to CDs should probably bite the bullet, as it appears likely that the cassette-tape format will soon go the way of the 8-track; CD album sales accounted for 94 percent of 2002’s total music sales.
