The Wallflowers assemble tour behind ‘Red Letter Days’
The Wallflowers, preparing to back the release of their forthcoming album “Red Letter Days,” have set the first leg of their first major tour in two years.
The Wallflowers, preparing to back the release of their forthcoming album “Red Letter Days,” have set the first leg of their first major tour in two years.
The outing kicks off on Nov. 20 in Denver, and dates so far are scheduled to run through early December. New Jersey rockers Ours, who will release a new album titled “Precious” on Nov. 5, have been tapped to open.
“Red Letter Days” originally was scheduled for release on Sept. 24, but was pushed back to Nov. 5. “The band believes too much in this record to cut even one corner,” frontman Jakob Dylan wrote on the band’s official website.
The album’s first single, “When You’re On Top,” was released in September.
“Red Letter Days” follows 2000’s “Breach,” which failed to live up to the high sales expectations set by its predecessor, the four-million-plus-selling 1996 release “Bringing Down the House.”
As they were on “Breach,” the Wallflowers are still without a full-time guitarist. According to the Los Angeles Times, frontman Jakob Dylan played most guitar parts on the new album, and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam contributed a few licks. The band has enlisted Yogi, most recently a member of Buckcherry, to play guitar on the upcoming tour.
Founding guitarist Tobi Miller, who left the Wallflowers in 1996, produced the new album along with Bill Appleberry (Adema, 7th House).

Bon Jovi - “Bounce” (Universal)
Bon Jovi is trying a creative approach to get fans to purchase their new CD rather than download it from the Internet. A registration number housed in the CD booklet gives the purchaser a free membership to the band’s new American XS club, which gives members access to unreleased music and ticket pre-sales, according to the group’s official website. Samples of the album’s tracks, including the hit “Everyday,” are posted at the group’s site. Promotional activity includes Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora’s scheduled Wednesday (10/9) night appearance on the syndicated radio program “Rockline.”

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - “The Last DJ” (Warner Bros.)
Petty and company’s latest is available in both a regular version and a special-edition package that contains a 38-minute documentary DVD featuring behind-the-scenes studio footage. The band launches the album with an Oct. 15 performance in Los Angeles, which will be transmitted live via satellite to 38 movie theaters throughout the U.S., and aired as a live simulcast on radio stations throughout the U.S. and Canada, according to the group’s official website. A tour kicks off later this month.

Jennifer Love Hewitt - “BareNaked” (Jive)
Though her TV and movie career has thrived in recent years, Hewitt’s first two forays into pop music--1995’s “Let’s Go Bang” and 1996’s self-titled album--failed to catch on with the masses. Hoping that the third album’s a charm, Hewitt wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the music on “BareNaked” with producer and co-writer Meredith Brooks, best known for her hit “Bitch.”

Sammy Hagar - “Not 4 Sale”
Hagar’s latest is his fourth release since his acrimonious 1996 split with Van Halen--a split that Eddie Van Halen attributed at that time to Hagar’s poor work ethic. It is his third album, meanwhile, to feature his band, the Waboritas. A complete track listing and audio samples of two songs--including the Led Zeppelin medley/tribute “Whole Lotta Zep"--are posted at Hagar’s official website.

Various artists - “Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three”
Rocker Henry Rollins became so incensed by the controversial conviction and ongoing imprisonment of three Arkansas men who many believe were wrongly convicted that he pulled together an all-star roster of singers and rappers for this benefit album, proceeds from which will go to the trio’s defense fund. In addition to Rollins, singers featured on the album include Iggy Pop, Ryan Adams, Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, former Faith No More frontman Mike Patton and others. Earlier this year, Rollins talked at length about the project during an interview with SoundSpike.

Gov’t Mule - “The Deep End, Vol. 2” (ATO)
This is the group’s second album to feature a lengthy roster of guest bassists, including Les Claypool (Primus), Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), Rocco Prestia, Alphonso Johnson, Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane), Chris Squire, Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Tony Levin, Billy Cox, George Porter Jr. (The Meters) and Me’Shell Ndegeocello. The new album is packaged with a bonus disc titled “Hidden Treasure Volume 2,” which includes “Drivin’ Rain"--featuring James Hetfield (Metallica) on vocals and Claypool on bass--as well as two previously unreleased live tracks, two DJ Logic Mule remixes, and “Weekend with Warren,” a short documentary about Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes.

Jewel packs her guitar for November tour
Singer-songwriter Jewel, who spent August and September playing solo-acoustic dates in the western U.S., takes her solo tour to the East Coast in November.
Singer-songwriter Jewel, who spent August and September playing solo-acoustic dates in the western U.S., takes her solo tour to the East Coast in November.
Jewel has kept a busy tour schedule all year, even though she was sidelined in April after she was thrown from a horse in Texas and suffered a broken collarbone. She embarked on a European tour with her band just a few weeks after the accident, but was unable to play guitar for about a month.
She followed the European dates with a 30-city summer tour of North America, during which her full band joined her, before playing her first round of solo-acoustic dates.
Jewel is supporting her platinum-certified fourth album, “This Way,” which was released in November of 2001.
Creed extends tour backing ‘Weathered’
Creed takes a short break from the road in late October, but returns to the tour trail in early November for a new round of dates.
Creed takes a short break from the road in late October, but returns to the tour trail in early November for a new round of dates.
The new tour stops are set in the South and Midwest, and follow the group’s current October run through the West.
The group continues to auction off general-admission pit tickets for most stops on the tour; auction proceeds benefit Stapp’s With Arms Wide Open Foundation.
Creed’s October dates feature support from Sevendust, 12 Stones and Cinder. Sevendust drops off the bill in November. Full details are posted in the tour section at Creed’s official website.
On October 22, Creed releases a limited-edition CD-single for its latest single, “Don’t Stop Dancing.” The disc will feature acoustic versions of “Don’t Stop Dancing” and “With Arms Wide Open,” as well as the “Don’t Stop Dancing” music video, multimedia highlights of the band’s new fan club magazine--titled “CreedINK"--and a free Creed poster, according to the group’s website.
“Weathered," Creed’s chart-topping third album, was released in November and sold about 887,000 copies during its first week out. The album spent its first eight weeks of release in the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 album chart, and in January was certified multi-platinum for shipping 5 million copies in the U.S.

John Mayer continues to tour through the fall
John Mayer, who took a pass through the U.S. this summer, kicks off another swing through the states in November.
John Mayer, who took a pass through the U.S. this summer, kicks off another swing through the states in November.
The fall U.S. outing--which follows Mayer’s October run through Europe, Australia and New Zealand--includes stops at several college venues.
Mayer’s tour supports his breakthrough 2001 release, “Room for Squares,” which features the hit “No Such Thing.” That album, now in its 39th week out, sits at No. 19 on the Oct. 5th Billboard 200 album chart.
That same chart also houses “Inside Wants Out,” which makes its debut at No. 22. The album, which hit stores in late September, is a reissued version of Mayer’s 1999 debut EP.

Album Chart: Elvis Presley still the king
Twenty-five years after his death, Elvis Presley’s reign as the King of Rock and Roll continues, as evidenced by his spot at the top of the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart.
Twenty-five years after his death, Elvis Presley’s reign as the King of Rock and Roll continues, as evidenced by his spot at the top of the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart.
“Elvis: 30 #1 Hits,” a best-of compilation of previously released tracks, sold more than half a million copies during its first week out, making it Presley’s first-ever No. 1 debut on the U.S. album chart, according to RCA Records. The album also debuted at No. 1 in 16 other countries, including Spain, Belgium, Argentina, New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Chile, Switzerland, Austria and the United Arab Emirates, the label announced.
Sales of the hits compilation were driven in part by the inclusion of a recent remix of Presley’s “A Little Less Conversation,” which topped the singles-sales chart in the U.S. earlier this year.
Presley’s posthumous, chart-topping performance leaves the Dixie Chicks’ “Home” at No. 2 and Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go” at No. 3,” followed by Disturbed’s “Believe,” down to No. 4 after debuting at No. 1 last week.
Nelly and Eminem continue to slowly lose ground, with “Nellyville” down one spot to No. 5 and “The Eminem Show” retreating two spots to No. 7.
Between the rappers is the No. 6 debut of India.Arie’s sophomore effort, “Voyage to India.” The album features the singer-songwriter’s latest single, “Little Things.”
The debut-heavy bottom of the Top 10 features Beck’s “Sea Change,” Peter Gabriel’s “Up” and Nas’ “The Lost Tapes,” which enter the chart at Nos. 8, 9 and 10, respectively.
Debuts outside the Top 10 include Pastor Troy’s “Universal Soldier” at No. 13, the “Brown Sugar” soundtrack at No. 18, Ryan Adams’ “Demolition” at No. 28, Uncle Kracker’s “No Stranger to Shame” at No. 43, Travis Tritt’s “Strong Enough” at No. 27, Jackson Browne’s “Naked Ride Home” at No. 36, Queen’s three-disc compilation “Greatest Hist I, II & III: The Platinum Collection” at No. 48, the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” soundtrack for the series’ “Once More With Feeling” musical episode at No. 49, Steve Earle’s “Jerusalem at No. 59, Chicago’s “The Very Best Of: Only the Beginning” at No. 63, UGK’s “Side Hustles” at No. 70, Tech N9ne’s “Absolute Power” at No. 79 and the “Sweet Home Alabama” soundtrack at No. 97.
Sinkers include Lifehouse’s “Stanley Climbfall,” which lands at No. 30 after debuting at No. 7 last week; Enrique Iglesias’ “Quizas,” which drops to No. 52 after debuting at No. 12; and John Mayer’s “Inside Wants Out,” a reissue of his 1999 debut EP, which freefalls to No. 86 after debuting at No. 22 last week.

Dave Matthews Band will play a series of December concert dates that focus on the eastern U.S.
The tour will follow the Nov. 5 release of “Live from Folsom Field,” a two-disc set recorded at the band’s July. 11, 2001 appearance in Boulder, Colo. A concert film from the same show is set for release on VHS and DVD on the same day.
Dave Matthews Band’s summer 2001 tour was the fourth highest-grossing tour of that year, taking in about $60.5 million, according to Pollstar.
Matthews is scheduled to play a solo-acoustic show at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall on Oct. 24 to support the Bullitt Foundation, which works to protect and restore the environment of the Pacific Northwest.
