Don Henley has assembled a roster of high-powered female artists to perform at November’s Stormy Weather 2002 benefit for Walden Woods.
The event, which takes place Nov. 13 at the Wiltern in Los Angeles, will feature Michelle Branch, Paula Cole, Deborah Cox, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Reba McEntire, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Susan Tedeschi and Trisha Yearwood, according to organizers. The 64-piece El Nino Orchestra will back the performers.
Henley is the event’s executive producer, a role he also held for a similar benefit concert in 1998. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Henley-founded Walden Woods Project and the Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods.
Henley founded the Walden Woods Project in 1990. The organization’s mission is to “protect land of ecological and historic significance surrounding Walden Pond, the famed retreat of author/philosopher Henry D. Thoreau; and to support the Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods and its educational initiatives related to the study of the environment and the humanities,” according to the Henley-penned mission statement posted at the organization’s official website.
Tickets for the Stormy Weather 2002 event are available through Ticketmaster.

Tribe of Judah, “Exit Elvis” (Spitfire)
After surviving his hazing in the Van Halen fraternity, Gary Cherone has re-teamed with former Extreme bandmates Pat Badger (bass) and Mike Mangini (drums) to form a quintet rounded out by Leo Mellace (guitar) and Steve Ferlazzo (keys/synth).
Despite the Extreme-heavy lineup, the group sounds almost nothing like that act. This is due in part to Ferlazzo, whose infectious, electronic soundscapes add to the music a dimension not heard on any of Extreme’s releases.
It can also be attributed to Cherone, whose voice sounds more dynamic and powerful than on any of his previous works, and whose songwriting style has developed a darker, moodier edge.
Most of the album’s 11 tracks are heavy, industrial rockers, and the entire collection is characterized by a crisp, clear, huge-sounding mix.
With a debut album this strong, the group’s only significant roadblock to success may lie in getting the public to belay its knee-jerk aversion to ‘80s- and ‘90s-era rock musicians.

Album Chart: Faith Hill, LL Cool J oust Elvis
Faith Hill’s “Cry” and LL Cool J’s “X” outsold all others during their first week in stores, and will finally dethrone the King from the top of the chart.
Faith Hill’s “Cry” and LL Cool J’s “X” outsold all others during their first week in stores, and will finally dethrone the King from the top of the chart.
“Cry," Hill’s first new release since 1999’s “Breathe,” moved about 472,000 copies during its inaugural week, according to industry sources, which is more than enough to secure the top spot on the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart. “X” comes in a distant second with first-week sales of about 154,000 copies.
The chart-topping newcomers push “Elvis: 30 #1 Hits” down to No. 3, ending Presley’s posthumous three-week reign at No. 1, while the Rolling Stones’ two-disc best-of set, “Forty Licks,” gives up one spot to land No. 4.
Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go” continues to stretch its legs in the Top 10, down a single notch to No. 5. The Dixie Chicks’ “Home,” Eminem’s “The Eminem Show” and Nelly’s “Nellyville” follow at Nos. 6, 7 and 8, respectively.
Two more debuts follow, with Gerald Levert’s “The G Spot” in at No. 9 and Dave Hollister’s “Things in the Game Done Changed” at No. 10.
Getting sprung from the Top 10 in a hurry is Bon Jovi’s “Bouce,” which bounces its way down to No. 13 after debuting at No. 2 last week. The album tallied up sales of about 61,000 copies during its second week out, about 100,000 copies less than its first-week total.
This week’s other debuts include “The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac” at No. 12, Taproot’s “Welcome “at No. 17, Tracy Chapman’s “Let It Rain” at No. 25, Bond’s “Shine” at No. 61 and Da Headbussaz’s “Dat’s How It Happened to ‘M” at No. 98.

Tim McGraw plans flurry of activity to launch new album
Tim McGraw offers up a new book and a prime-time television special in conjunction with the Nov. 26 release of “Tim McGraw & the Dancehall Doctors.”
Tim McGraw offers up a new book and a prime-time television special in conjunction with the Nov. 26 release of “Tim McGraw & the Dancehall Doctors.”
On the same day that the new album arrives in stores, Simon & Schuster releases “Tim McGraw & the Dancehall Doctors: This Is Ours,” a McGraw-penned book that chronicles the making of his new album.
The Eagles’ Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit both appear on the 15-track album, as does singer Kim Carnes, according to McGraw’s publicist.
“Making this record was the most fun I’ve ever had in the studio and the most rewarding musical experience I’ve ever had,” McGraw said in a statement. “I think I sang more honestly on this record, and that came from the honesty that the music was played with.”
McGraw will help launch the new album with a one-hour television special titled “Tim McGraw: Sing Me Home,” which will air on NBC on Nov. 27.
