Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bruce Cockburn and Patty Griffin will tour five Southeast cities in November “to raise money for, and awareness of, the global landmine crisis,” according to organizers.

Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bruce Cockburn and Patty Griffin will tour five Southeast cities in November “to raise money for, and awareness of, the global landmine crisis,” according to organizers.

The tour, which will feature an acoustic set by each artist, is the fourth that Harris has organized in the last five years. All proceeds will benefit “programs of the Washington, D.C.-based Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation that assist civilian victims of conflict around the world, and its work to raise American public awareness of the global landmine crisis,” according to a press release.

“Global events and the war on terrorism in the post-September 11th climate have made the landmine issue more topical to the American public,” VVAF president Bobby Muller said in a statement. “The lift these artists give to our cause, and the direct benefit to our overseas work is just tremendous.”

Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay shot dead

Jam Master Jay, DJ for seminal rap trio Run-DMC, was shot and killed in a New York recording studio on Wednesday (10/30). He was 37.

Jam Master Jay, DJ for seminal rap trio Run-DMC, was shot and killed in a New York recording studio on Wednesday (10/30). He was 37.

Jay--real name Jason Mizell--reportedly was sitting on a couch in a lounge area of the Queens, N.Y., studio at about 7:30 p.m. when he was shot once in the head. The shooter, who is still at large, was reportedly one of two men who were buzzed into the secure building just before the shooting.

A second man, Urieco Rincon, 25, who reportedly was in the lounge playing a video game with Mizell at the time of the shooting, suffered a gunshot wound to one of his legs and was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The shooter’s motive remains unknown, according to police.

Mizell leaves behind a wife and three children.

Joseph “Run” Simmons--younger brother of Def Jam records founder Russell Simmons--Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and Mizell grew up in New York’s Queens borough, and formed Run-DMC in the early ‘80s. The trio is considered one of rap’s most influential and pioneering acts.

Run-DMC’s self-titled, 1984 debut and 1985 follow-up, “King of Rock,” spawned a series of popular singles, including “Sucker M.C.’s,” “Rock Box” and the “King of Rock” title track. Both albums featured tracks that put the spotlight on Mizell, including “Run DMC“‘s “Jam Master Jay” and “Jay’s Game,” and “King of Rock“‘s “Jam Master Jammin’.”

The group’s third album, “Raising Hell,” was the first rap album to sell more than one million copies. The album’s sales were propelled by its chart-topping hit “Walk This Way,” a remake of the Aerosmith track. The cut features Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry, and is credited in part for reviving Aerosmith’s then-flagging career.

Run-DMC’s most-recent album of new material is last year’s “Crown Royal.” A greatest-hits compilation surfaced earlier this year. The trio had recently been on tour with Aerosmith and Kid Rock.

Album Chart: Santana lands first No. 1 debut

Commercially revitalized by the success of 1999’s “Supernatural,” Santana scores its first No. 1 debut with that album’s successor, “Shaman.”

Commercially revitalized by the success of 1999’s “Supernatural,” Santana scores its first No. 1 debut with that album’s successor, “Shaman.”

Like its predecessor, “Shaman” features Santana backing a roster of high-profile singers, such as Michelle Branch, who is featured on the album’s first single, “The Game of Love.” That hit helped “Shaman” move almost 300,000 copies during its first week out, according to Arista.

Also scoring high-charting debuts are the Foo Fighter’s latest, “One By One,” which enters the chart at No. 3 after selling about 121,000 copies; and Rod Stewart’s “It Had to Be You: The Great American Songbook"--a collection of classic covers--which lands at No. 4 with sales of about 114,000 copies, according to industry sources.

Sandwiched among the chart-topping newcomers is Faith Hill’s “Cry,” which slips one spot to No. 2 after debuting at No. 1 last week.

The Elvis Presley best-of set “Elvis: 30 No. 1 Hits” also loses ground, down two spots to No. 5. The album, which spent its first three weeks at No. 1, has sold almost 1.3 million copies in five weeks.

The Dixie Chicks’ “Home” and Eminem’s “The Eminem Show” both stay put at Nos. 6 and 7, respectively, while Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go” drops three places to No. 8, the Rolling Stones’ “Forty Licks” slips five spots to No. 9 and Nelly’s “Nellyville” dips two spots to No. 10.

Ducking out of the Top 10 are LL Cool J’s “X,” which drops to No. 11 after debuting at No. 2 last week; Geralt Levert’s “G Spot,” which is down to No. 18 after debuting at No. 9 last week; and Dave Hollister’s “Things in the Game Done Changed,” which sinks from No. 10 to No. 29.

Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland lands just outside the Top 10 with her solo debut, “Simply Deep,” which enters the chart at No. 12 thanks to sales of about 77,000 copies. Close behind are Michael W. Smith’s “Worship Again” and 3LW’s “Girl Can Mack,” which debut at Nos. 14 and 15, respectively.

Other albums debuting this week include Field Mob’s “From the Roota to tha Toota” at No. 33, Scarface’s “Greatest Hits” at No. 40, Kenny G’s “Wishes” at No. 64, “The Best of David Bowie” at No. 70, Jaguares’ “El Primer Instinto” at No. 95, the Transplants’ self-titled set at No. 96, VH1’s “Divas 2002” compilation at No. 104, SR-71’s “Tomorrow” at No. 138, the Donnas’ “Spent the night at No. 140, and Black Crowes’ frontman Chris Robinson’s solo debut, “New Earth Mud,” at No. 141.

The band’s website also reveals that, “in addition to their sold-out New Year’s shows, Phish will hit the road several times in 2003, including a run of dates in the second half of February that spans both coasts--details to follow in the coming weeks.”

    Christina Aguilera - “Stripped” (RCA)

Aguilera’s latest--which is her first English-language album of original material since her multi-platinum 1999 eponymous debut--features the new hit, “Dirrty.” That song, along with the album’s remaining 15 tracks, “decisively shred Christina’s squeaky clean persona,” according to an RCA press release. The “Dirrty” music video is streaming at the label’s official website.

Various artists - “8 Mile” soundtrack (Interscope)

Eminem makes his motion picture debut in this Curtis Hanson film, and three new songs from the rapper anchor the soundtrack. The album also includes new music from 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Nas, Xzibit, D12, Rakim, Gangstar and Obie Trice. Early pressings will include a free Shady/Aftermath sampler and enhanced CD.

    _________________________

Tori Amos - “Scarlet’s Walk” (Epic)

Amos left Atlantic Records last year, and quickly signed on with Epic. Her new label describes “Scarlet’s Walk” as “a sonic novel” featuring a main character named Scarlet, “a woman who crisscrosses the country in search of answers, in search of herself.” Amos self-produced the album, and recorded it in the same Cornwall, England studio where she recorded several of her previous albums.

    _________________________

Nick Carter - “Now or Never” (Jive)

This Backstreet Boys member’s solo debut houses his new hit, “Help Me.” The singer will launch the album with an appearance on Tuesday’s edition of MTV’s “Total Request Live,” on which the “Help Me” music video has been turning up as of late. A limited-edition version of the CD will feature a bonus DVD, according to Carter’s official website, which is streaming six of the album’s tracks.

    Shaggy - “Lucky Day” (MCA)

After selling more than 10 million copies of 2000’s “Hotshot,” Shaggy returns with “Lucky Day,” which features the track “Hey Sexy Lady.” Both the single and its companion music video are available via the Shaggy Jukebox posted at Shaggy’s official website.

    _________________________

Sixpence None the Richer - “Divine Discontent” (Reprise)

This Christian pop group broke through to the mainstream with its self-titled 1997 release, which featured the Grammy-nominated No. 1 hit “Kiss Me.” Though the band entered the studio to begin work on a new album in the spring of 2000, a contractual dispute with its previous label kept the group’s new music from hitting stores until now. Among the new album’s tracks is a cover of Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream it’s Over.”
