Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner plans solo dates
Soul Asylum frontman Dave Pirner, who releases his debut solo album on July 30, is backing the release with a U.S. club tour.
Soul Asylum frontman Dave Pirner, who releases his debut solo album on July 30, is backing the release with a U.S. club tour.
Pirner wrote and produced the new album, titled “Faces and Names,” and recorded it in his adopted hometown of New Orleans. In a recent statement, Pirner explained that the album was influenced by that city’s rich music scene.
“Moving to New Orleans [from Minneapolis in the mid-’90s] and listening to the local players really changed how I think about music,” Pirner said. “It had a huge impact on me.”
Keyboardist Billy Preston appears on the album’s first single, “Never Recover.”
Pirner, who has served as Soul Asylum’s frontman for 20 years, recorded his solo material while writing and touring with Soul Asylum between 1999 and 2001.
Recording a solo album “wasn’t in any way something I’d always wanted to do, and it wasn’t because I was having problems with Soul Asylum or anything like that,” Pirner said in his label biography. “It was a window that I saw and just went, ‘I wonder what it would be like to make a record without the support system I’ve had for the last 20 years. I wonder if I can do it.’”
Soul Asylum plans to release a new album in the spring of 2003.

“Trail of Memories: The Randy Travis Anthology,” is set for release on July 16 by Rhino Records. The two-disc, 44-track set features hits and album cuts released from 1986 to 1999. Travis has recorded more than a dozen albums in for Warner Bros. and DreamWorks during that span, more than half of which have reached multi-platinum status.
Travis’ latest single is “America Will Always Stand,” a song he wrote with a team of other writers two days after the Sept. 11 attacks. All proceeds from the sale of the single will go to the American Red Cross.
A new Travis song titled “Counting on Me” appears on the recently released Gaither Gospel Series album “Homecoming Lullabies,” a collection of original lullabies.
Last year, Travis released his first live video, “Randy Travis Live – It Was Just A Matter Of Time,” which was recorded in December of 2000 in Anaheim, Calif. A companion soundtrack was also issued.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kick off a 39-city North American tour in August, and are planning additional U.S. dates for the summer of 2003.
The outing opens on Aug. 7 in the New York City area, and the last 2002 date is set for Dec. 13 in Albany, N.Y. Seven European dates are scheduled to take place from Oct. 14-27, but specific dates and venues haven’t been announced.
The tour’s first ticket sales are expected to begin this weekend, with Washington, D.C.; San Jose, Calif.; Cleveland, Ohio and New York, NY among the shows lined up to go on sale Saturday morning (7/13), according to Ticketmaster. Tacoma, Wash. is currently listed to go on sale next Saturday (7/20). Visit SoundSpike’s Ticket Window column on Thursday (7/11) evening for updated ticket on-sale information.
“Our approach is to bring the music out to as wide a cross-section of the country as we could,” Jon Landau, Springsteen’s manager, told the Associated Press. “So we’re taking this barnstorming approach--one city, one show.” Landau added that floor tickets will be general admission.
In 2003, the tour will continue with dates in Australia, a return to Europe, and additional U.S. concerts. The band will play multiple shows in major cities during its 2003 summer run, according to Springsteen’s publicist.
Prior to the tour, at least two warm-up performances at New Jersey’s Asbury Park Convention Hall are planned: on July 26 for radio contest winners and on July 30 for NBC-TV’s “Today" show.
Springsteen’s sold-out 1999-2000 world tour grossed more than $107 million in North America, according to Pollstar. It was Springsteen’s first U.S. tour with the E Street Band in more than a decade.
A new album titled “The Rising"--the first that Springsteen has recorded with the E Street Band since 1984’s “Born in the U.S.A."--is set for release on July 30.
Album Chart: Nelly spends second week in top spot
Compilations from Aerosmith and Def Jam imprint Murder Inc. each debut in the Top 10 this week, but neither is able to dethrone “Nellyville,” which debuted at No. 1 last week and will remain there on the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart.
Compilations from Aerosmith and Def Jam imprint Murder Inc. each debut in the Top 10 this week, but neither is able to dethrone “Nellyville,” which debuted at No. 1 last week and will remain there on the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart.
After scoring first-week sales of about 714,000 copies, St. Louis rapper Nelly moved about 447,000 more copies of “Nellyville” during its second week in stores, according to industry sources. That’s more than enough to keep it well ahead of “The Eminem Show,” which sold about 263,000 copies during its seventh week out and will spend its second week at No. 2.
Behind the pair of chart-topping rappers come this week’s two Top 10 debuts, the first of which is Murder Inc.’s “Irv Gotti Presents ... the Inc.”, which sold about 193,000 copies to earn a No. 3 debut. Fueling the album’s sales is its hit single, “Down 4 U,” a collaboration that features Ja Rule, Ashanti, Vita and Charli Baltimore.
Debuting at No. 4 is Aerosmith’s latest best-of compilation, “Oh Yeah! Ultimate Greatest Hits,” which sold about 137,000 copies. Spurring sales is the group’s latest hit, “Girls of Summer,” one of two new tracks included on the album.
Down one notch to No. 5 is Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go,” featuring her hit “Complicated.” Both Staying put for the second consecutive week, meanwhile, are Ashanti’s self-titled debut at No. 6, and Korn’s “Untouchables” at No. 7.
Slipping five places from its No. 3 debut last week is Capone-N-Noreaga rapper N.O.R.E.’s “God’s Favorite,” which drops to No. 8. Trailing that album are Pink’s “Missundaztood” and the “Totally Hits 2000” compilations, which swap their previous week’s positions to land at Nos. 9 and 10, respectively.
Checking out of the Top 10 are Papa Roach’s “Lovehatetragedy,” which debuted at No. 2 two weeks back, slipped to No. 8 last week and is down to No. 13 this week; and Truth Hurts’ “Truthfully Speaking,” which drops from No. 5 to No. 16.
Albums debuting outside of the Top 10 include the “Like Mike” soundtrack at No. 18, Oasis’ “Heathen Chemistry” at No. 23, Green Day’s “Shenanigans” at No. 27, and Chicago’s “The Very Best Of: Only the Beginning” at No. 38.
