Grateful Dead survivors plan to tour as The Other Ones
The surviving members of the Grateful Dead plan to tour the northeastern U.S. later this year, but only if the group’s Aug. 3-4 event at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, Wis., goes smoothly.
The surviving members of the Grateful Dead plan to tour the northeastern U.S. later this year, but only if the group’s Aug. 3-4 event at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, Wis., goes smoothly.
Reuniting as The Other Ones, Grateful Dead survivors Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir will close both days of the sold-out Wisconsin festival--dubbed Terrapin Station, A Grateful Dead Family Reunion--with two sets. The festival will also feature performances by the survivors’ respective solo projects.
The Terrapin Station event was thrown into doubt in June after highway officials, who were concerned that upwards of 200,000 people would flock to the area, denied a request by promoter Clear Channel Entertainment to stage the show.
County officials reconsidered after Clear Channel presented a detailed security plan.
The Other Ones will embark on a 13-city tour in November, “conditional upon a safe and positive outcome of Alpine Valley,” according to the official Grateful Dead website. “What this means is that the request for only people with tickets to come to the show has to be strictly adhered to. Failure to comply with this simple request will put these tour dates in serious jeopardy.”
The Alpine Valley show will mark the first time that all surviving members of the Grateful Dead have performed together since the death of singer-guitarist Jerry Garcia. The group performed their last show in Chicago on July 9, 1995. Garcia died a month later in California after he suffered a heart attack at a substance-abuse treatment facility.
Sharon Osbourne ships Ozzy back to Ozzfest
Sharon Osbourne has sent husband Ozzy back out on tour because he almost fainted during her first chemotherapy session.
Sharon Osbourne has sent husband Ozzy back out on tour because he almost fainted during her first chemotherapy session.
“It seems that Ozzy may not be the Iron Man after all,” Osbourne’s publicist said in a prepared statement. “After attending his wife Sharon’s first chemotherapy treatment, he nearly passed out and had to be taken to a recovery room. Sharon now realizes that Ozzy is better off on the road so she’s shipped him back out to finish Ozzfest.”
Last Friday (7/26), Ozzy announced that he would be leaving the tour from Aug. 3 through Aug. 20 to be with Sharon, and said that he planned to rejoin the run on Aug. 22. Now, however, he is due to return to the tour’s roster on Aug. 7, and will miss only the Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 shows.
System of a Down will headline Ozzfest during Ozzy’s pair of missed dates.
Sharon Osbourne underwent surgery for colon cancer early last month, and learned shortly thereafter that she would need to begin chemotherapy because the cancer had spread.

The outing--which is sponsored by CMT and is dubbed the CMT Most Wanted Live tour--features Paisley in the top slot, and also boasts a rotating roster of opening acts that includes Steve Azar, Chris Cagle, Tammy Cochran, Andy Griggs, Steve Holy, Shannon Lawson, Pinmonkey, Rascal Flatts, Tommy Shane Steiner, and Darryl Worley, according to a press release.
CMT will air regular tour updates during its “CMT Most Wanted Live” television series, which airs Tuesday through Saturday. More information is available at CMT’s official website.
The CMT Most Wanted Live tour marks Paisley’s latest round of dates behind last year’s “Part II,” which features the track “I’m Gonna Miss Her.” The song’s companion music-video won the Flameworthy Concept Video of the year at this year’s CMT Flameworthy Music Awards.

Tool continues summer road trip, plots fall outing
Prog-rock act Tool plans to follow its current summer tour, which runs into September, with a second round of dates in October and November.
Prog-rock act Tool plans to follow its current summer tour, which runs into September, with a second round of dates in October and November.
The band has not yet announced its fall itinerary, but is expected to route the tour through smaller markets that it doesn’t usually hit, according to its official website.
In mid-August, Tool will take a break from playing amphitheaters and arenas when it performs at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. The venue seats about 6,000.
Tool remains on the road behind last year’s “Lateralus,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The album features the singles “Schism” and “Parabola.”
Tomahawk--one of several bands fronted by former Faith No More singer Mike Patton--is opening on Tool’s in-progress summer run; Tool hasn’t yet named an opener for the fall leg.
New India.Arie album due in September
R&B singer India.Arie releases her sophomore album, “Voyage to India?” on Sept. 24, according to Motown Records.
R&B singer India.Arie releases her sophomore album, “Voyage to India?” on Sept. 24, according to Motown Records.
On Friday (8/2), the album’s first single, “Little Things,” will debut online at AOL Music’s First Listen (Keyword: First Listen) and at music.netscape.com, where it will continue to stream through Aug. 4.
India.Arie’s debut, “Acoustic Soul,” garnered seven Grammy Awards in 2001, but the singer didn’t take home any awards. The album has sold 1.8 million records to date, according to Motown Records, and remains among the top 100 best-selling albums in the U.S. more than a year after its release.
Album Chart: Toby Keith scores No. 1 debut
Maybe it was patriotism, or maybe a simple love of country music; either way, music buyers bought more copies of Toby Keith’s “Unleashed” last week than any other album.
Maybe it was patriotism, or maybe a simple love of country music; either way, music buyers bought more copies of Toby Keith’s “Unleashed” last week than any other album.
“Unleashed" sold about 338,000 copies during its first week out, according to industry sources, which places it at No.1 on the forthcoming Billboard 200 chart. The album’s sales were propelled by its post-Sept. 11 anthem “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” as well as by the buzz created when ABC-TV pulled Keith’s performance of the song from the network’s Fourth of July special.
“Now That’s What I Call Music! 10,” the latest installment in the successful compilation series, narrowly missed grabbing the franchise’s fifth U.S. No. 1 debut. Falling about 50,000 copies shy of “Unleashed“‘s total, “Now! 10"--which features previously released hits from Britney Spears, Shakira, Marc Anthony, Vanessa Carlton, Celine Dion, Lenny Kravitz, ‘NSync and the Baha Men--debuts at No. 2.
The newcomers push Nelly’s “Nellyville” down one spot, Eminem’s “The Eminem Show” down two spots and the Dave Matthews Band’s “Busted Stuff” down three spots to Nos. 3, 4 and 5, respectively. “Busted Stuff,” which debuted at No. 1 last week with first-week sales of about 621,000 copies, saw that total drop to about 211,000 copies during its second week, according to industry sources.
Cash Money Millionaire Lil’ Wayne--not to be confused with Lil’ Bow Wow or Lil’ Romeo--rides the youngster-rap wave to a No. 6 debut with his third album, “500 Degrees.”
Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go” and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “By the Way” dip to Nos. 7 and 8, respectively, while Mario’s self-titled first album and Boyz II Men’s “Full Circle” debut at Nos. 9 and 10, respectively.
The first album from rock quartet Trust Company, “The Lonely Position of Neutral,” just misses a Top 10 debut, and enters the chart at No. 11.
Albums debuting further down the chart include compilation album “Monsta Jamz” at No. 22, “Mack 10 Presents Da Hood” at No. 40, Joe Nichols’ “Man with a Memory” at No. 107 and Public Enemy, Revolverlution, and Public Enemy’s “Revolverlution” at No. 110.

Nelly and his St. Louis group the St. Lunatics open a fall tour of amphitheaters and arenas in October.
Nelly and his St. Louis group the St. Lunatics open a fall tour of amphitheaters and arenas in October.
About 20 dates are planned, with Mario, Big Tymers and Lil Wayne in the opening slots, according to Nelly’s publicist.
After just three weeks in stores, Nelly’s sophomore album, “Nellyville,” was certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipping more than 3 million copies in the U.S. According to industry sources, nearly 2 million copies of the album sold during that period.
“Nellyville," buoyed by the hit single “Hot in Herre,” spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and dipped to No. 2 on the latest chart.
“Dilemma," an album track from “Nellyville,” is currently the No. 5 most-played song at rap and crossover radio format, and ranks at No. 10 and No. 12 at pop and R&B radio stations, according to Airplay Monitor.
Nelly’s released his debut, “Country Grammar,” in the summer of 2000, and the album yielded three major hits. According to Universal Records, more than 9 million copies of the album have sold worldwide.

Rod Stewart, who long ago established himself as a premier interpreter of R&B, folk and rock songs, will focus on American standards from the ‘20s and ‘30s on his next album, which is set for release on Oct. 15.
Among the songs Stewart has recorded for as-yet-untitled album are “These Foolish Things,” which features a solo by saxophonist Dave Koz; “It Had to Be You” featuring a solo by Michael Brecker; the 1938 classic “You Go To My Head”; “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” written by George and Ira Gershwin in 1938; 1936’s “The Way You Look Tonight” written by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields; the 1930’s love song “The Very Thought of You”; as well as “For All We Know,” “Where or When,” “Moonglow,” “Everytime We Say Goodbye” and others.
“Recording these songs that I grew up with has been a life long dream of mine,” Stewart said in a statement. “Making this album was a great challenge and I’m thrilled with the outcome.”
The new album marks Stewart’s debut for Clive Davis’ J Records. Stewart parted ways with Atlantic Records in 2001, and Davis signed him to J Records in February after hearing the initial demos for the forthcoming album. Phil Ramone and Richard Perry were brought in to produce the album.
According to J Records, Stewart has sold more than 120 million records over the course of his career, and his greatest-hits album, “The Story So Far,” has sold more than 2.5 million copies in 2002.
Britney Spears says weather was to blame for Mexico City walk-off

Britney Spears’ camp, doing some damage control after the singer aborted her Sunday (7/28) concert in Mexico City shortly after it began, says the weather was responsible for her early departure
“About 35 minutes into her performance at the Foro Del Sol Stadium a hazardous lightning storm made it essential for Spears to depart the stage,” Jive Records said in a press release issued on Tuesday (7/30). “Spears began the show during a break between two rainstorms, but the degree of risk to the audience and stage crew associated with the second storm, an electrical storm, made it impossible for the show to continue. In addition to the risk the storm imposed on her, the production equipment in the show was being affected causing a good number of the 300 robotic lights and pyrotechnics to malfunction.”
According to Jive, Spears was “very upset” that she had to cancel the show. “I’m sorry I couldn’t finish the show for my fans,” she said. “The Mexican fans are one of the best audiences to play for. We decided that we had no choice but to cancel the show after the storm and lightning showed no signs of clearing up.”
Spears reportedly cut off her set after performing just four songs. According to the Mexico City newspaper Milenio, angry fans chanted “fraud, fraud” when they were asked to leave Foro Sol stadium.
According to Jive, tickets can be returned to the point of purchase for a refund.
