In a rambling journal entry on Bush‘s official website, frontman Gavin Rossdale writes that the band will go on without guitarist Nigel Pulsford. Chris Traynor, the former Helmet guitarist who has been substituting for Pulsford of late, will apparently take over. Pulsford co-founded the band with Rossdale in the early ‘90s.

Sony’s “Key2Audio” technology, which was designed to prevent the copying of CDs, can be defeated by scribbling around the rim of the disc with a felt-tip marker, or by placing tape on outermost track, according to various reports. Sony warns, however, that marking too much of the disc can make tracks unplayable, and that tape might damage CD players and computers.

Tracks from Rage and Cornell sessions leaked
Speculation about what music by the Chris Cornell-fronted Rage Against the Machine lineup might sound like has ended for many now that a number of the already-defunct group’s songs have turned up on the Internet.
Speculation about what music by the Chris Cornell-fronted Rage Against the Machine lineup might sound like has ended for many now that a number of the already-defunct group’s songs have turned up on the Internet.
Thirteen tracks attributed to the quartet--Cornell, Tom Morello (guitar), Brad Wilk (drums) and Tim Commerford--surfaced on an Italian website last week, according to MTV. Though the site has since been pulled down, the tracks are being traded via numerous file-sharing networks.
Epic Records is due to release this summer the finished album that Cornell and company recorded, but it is not clear if the tracks currently circulating on the Internet are the same ones that will be featured on the release.
The label and Rage Against the Machine’s management had not responded by press time to SoundSpike’s inquiry about the tracks.
A number of the song files attributed to Cornell and Rage that are circulating on the Internet do feature Cornell’s instantly recognizable vocals, as well as music performed by a power trio that clearly sounds like Morello, Wilk and Commerford.
Some of the circulating files that are credited to the group, however, are actually tracks from 1991’s “Temple of the Dog” CD, a one-off project that featured Cornell with members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.
Additional files that are circulating under the guise of the Cornell-Rage collaboration include songs by presumably unsigned and largely unknown musicians, as well as the Milli Vanilli track “Blame it on the Rain” from 1989’s “Girl You Know It’s True.”
Last May, Cornell and the Rage Against the Machine trio confirmed that they were recording an album together. The news followed the October 2000 departure of Rage frontman Zack de la Rocha.
In March, Ozzfest organizers announced that the group would grace this year’s Ozzfest roster. Several days later, news surfaced that Cornell has quit the outfit.
The new quartet never announced a name for itself, but did confirm that it would not be called Rage Against the Machine.

Napster’s founder and CEO resign amid bankruptcy rumors
Napster CEO Konrad Hilburs and company founder Shawn Fanning on Tuesday (5/14) announced their resignations from the embattled file-sharing service, which has been offline since last summer.
Napster CEO Konrad Hilburs and company founder Shawn Fanning on Tuesday (5/14) announced their resignations from the embattled file-sharing service, which has been offline since last summer.
Hilburs’ resignation followed the collapse of Napster’s buyout negotiations with German media juggernaut Bertelsmann Group, which has been subsidizing the Napster for months now, reportedly for a total of $85 million. In its recent negotiations with Napster, Bertelsmann reportedly offered a buyout of $16.5 million and erasure of the total debt.
“I am convinced that not pursuing the offer is a mistake,” Hilbers reportedly wrote in an internal company memo announcing his resignation, “and it will lead the company to a place where I don’t want to lead it.”
Fanning, Napster’s 20-year-old founder and the company’s most recognizable figure, announced shortly thereafter that he would be following Hilbers out the door.
Speculation is widespread that the company may now file for bankruptcy, and that such a move would likely result in the company’s permanent demise.
Napster appears now to be helmed by a board of directors that comprises Hank Barry and John Hummer of venture capital firm Hummer Winblad, and Shawn Fanning’s uncle, John Fanning.
Infighting between the three board members likely contributed to the company’s inability to reach an agreement with Bertelsmann; John Fanning, in a bid to gain control of the company, recently filed a lawsuit against Barry and Hummer. A Delaware court reportedly dismissed the suit this week.
Last summer, after months of court battles, Napster went offline with plans to re-launch with a subscription-based model in which users would pay a monthly fee for access to music files. The company, which has long been the target of a copyright-infringement lawsuit filed by the major record labels, last year was able to hammer out a strategic alliance with Bertelsmann, parent company of major-label BMG, but was unable to strike similar deals with the remaining labels.
Launched in 1999, Napster quickly became the target of copyright infringement lawsuits filed by major and minor record labels, and by artists such as Metallica and Dr. Dre. Through a series of legal maneuvers and settlements, the company was able to dodge a court-ordered shutdown until last year.
The company’s current situation can be viewed as both a victory and a defeat for the major record labels; the labels have long wanted the company to be shut down, which it now appears will be a permanent outcome. Napster’s financial dire straits, however, will likely mean that the labels will not be able to collect any potential damages that its lawsuit may have yielded if successful.
Further undermining the labels’ seeming victory over Napster is the bumper crop of similar peer-to-peer file-sharing software--such as LimeWire and Morpheus--that has sprung up and gained widespread popularity since Napster went offline.
Album Chart: Musiq tops, Lauryn Hill follows
Soul singer Musiq scores big with his sophomore effort, “Juslisen,” which takes the No. 1 spot on the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart. Not far behind is Lauryn Hill’s second solo release.
Soul singer Musiq scores big with his sophomore effort, “Juslisen,” which takes the No. 1 spot on the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart. Not far behind is Lauryn Hill’s second solo release.
“Juslisen"--the follow up to Musiq’s 2000 debut, “Aijuswanaseing"--sold about 260,000 copies during its first week in stores, according to industry sources, thanks in part to its hit single, “Halfcrazy.”
The only other newcomer to the Top 10 this week is Lauryn Hill’s “MTV Unplugged 2.0,” which enters the chart at No. 3. The two-disc album, which features the ex-Fugee performing new songs acoustically, sold about 122,000 copies.
Sandwiched between the new debuts is Celine Dion’s “A New Day Has Come,” which grabs traction to climb from No. 6 to No. 2. The album experienced a one-week sales increase of about 40,000 copies.
Slipping two spots this week are Ashanti’s self-titled debut, which drops to No. 4; Kenny Chesney’s “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems,” down to No. 5; and the “Spider-Man” soundtrack, down to No. 6.
Sheryl Crow’s “C’mon, C’mon” climbs one spot to No. 7, while Big Tymers’ “Hood Rich,” which debuted in the top slot last week, slides to No. 8.
Closing out the Top 10 are the “Now That’s What I Call Music! Vol. 9” hits compilation at No. 9 and Josh Groban’s self-titled debut at No. 10.
This week’s debuts happening outside of the Top 10 include Naughty by Nature’s “IIcons” at No. 15; Tom Waits’ “Blood Money” and “Alice” at Nos. 32 and 33, respectively; Coal Chamber’s “Dark Days” at No. 34; Kellie Coffey’s “When You Lie Next to Me” at No. 54; and the “Family Values 2001 Tour” live set at No. 55.

Album Chart: Big Tymers come out on top
The third time has proven to be the charm for Cash Money rappers Big Tymers, whose third album, “Hood Rich,” outsold all others during its first week in stores.
The third time has proven to be the charm for Cash Money rappers Big Tymers, whose third album, “Hood Rich,” outsold all others during its first week in stores.
“Hood Rich” makes its debut in the No. 1 spot on the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart with sales of about 160,000 copies, according to industry sources. That places its performance well behind recent Top 10 debuts, such as last week’s No. 1 debut of Kenny Chesney’s “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems,” which moved about 235,000 copies its first week out.
Chesney’s reign at No. 1 was short-lived, however, and the album slips to No. 3 with sales of about 125,000 copies. Ashanti’s self-titled debut stays put at No. 2 for the second consecutive week with sales of about 128,000 copies.
Two debuts follow, with “Spider-Man (Music From and Inspired By)’’ coming in at No. 4 and Vanessa Carlton’s “Be Not Nobody” at No. 5. The “Spider-Man” soundtrack, which sold about 112,000 copies, features the Sum 41 hit “What We’re All About (The Original Version).” Carlton’s inaugural release, which features the hit “A Thousand Miles,” sold about 102,000 copies.
Four out of the five remaining albums in the Top 10 lose ground this week, with Celine Dion’s “A New Day Has Come” slipping three spots to No. 6, “Now That’s What I Call Music! Vol. 9” down two spots to No. 7, Sheryl Crow’s “C’mon C’mon” down four spots to No. 8 and the “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack down two spots to No. 10. Josh Groban’s self-titled release, however, spends its second consecutive week at No. 9.
Pink’s “Missundaztood” and the soundtracks for “The Scorpion King” and “Star Wars: Episode II” make way for the trio of Top 10 debuts, with “Missundastood” down one notch to No. 11, “The Scorpion King” down six places to No. 13 and “Star Wars,” which debuted at No. 6 last week, down nine spots to No. 15.
Ali’s “Heavy Starch” makes its debut at No. 24, Phish frontman Trey Anastasio’s self-titled solo debut comes in at No. 45, Blackalicious’ “Blazing Arrow” at No. 49, C-Murder’s “Tru Dawgs at No. 67 and “Sharp Dressed Men: A Tribute to ZZ Top” at No. 81.

Tom Waits - “Alice “ and “Blood Money” (Anti/Epitaph)
Three years after the critically acclaimed “Mule Variations” hit stores, the eccentric star releases two separate albums on the same day. Waits wrote and produced both albums with Kathleen Brennan, his wife and frequent collaborator. The songs on “Blood Money” are based on the unfinished Georg Buchner play “Woyzeck,” an 1820s tale of a poor soldier driven mad by medical experiments and an unfaithful wife. The songs on “Alice” were written for an avant-garde Robert Wilson opera that ran during 1992 and 1993 in Hamburg, but weren’t previously recorded. Waits appears on CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman” on Wednesday (5/8).

Various artists - “The Family Values Tour 2001” (Elektra)
Last year’s Family Values Tour spawns this live set, which follows live releases from the ‘98 and ‘99 outings. Josh Abraham (Staind, “Family Values Tour ‘98,” Limp Bizkit) produced the 12-track collection, which features performances from Staind, Linkin Park, Static X and headliners Stone Temple Pilots, the latter of whom contribute four tracks to the set. Staind frontman Aaron Lewis shows up on STP’s performance of “Creep,” as well as on Linkin Park’s “One Step Closer.” More info is available at the album’s official website.

Coal Chamber - “Dark Days” (Roadrunner)
Coal Chamber’s third album surfaces amidst reports of turmoil within the band. Following an on-stage scuffle between some of the group’s members during a recent show in Lubbock, Texas, frontman Dez Fafara ditched the group mid-set, and the band subsequently scrapped several scheduled performances, according to Roadrunner Records. A release-day show at the Key Club in Los Angeles is still on, however; fans can get a ticket to the show by purchasing “Dark Days” at the Tower Records store on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, according to the group’s official website.
