Report: Clear Channel submits top offer for House of Blues

Denver’s Rocky Mountain News reported on Friday (4/12) that Clear Channel’s bid to purchase the House of Blues clubs and concert-promotions business could be approved by HOB’s board later this month.
Clear Channel’s offer--said to be well over $200 million--reportedly bested bids by Concerts West, which is headed by Denver billionaire Phil Anschultz, and Key3Media Group, led by former Ticketmaster exec Fred Rosen. The deal is said to include a clause that would force Clear Channel to pay HOB millions if the purchase falls through.
According to concert industry trade publication Pollstar, Clear Channel sold more than 27 million tickets to its North American concerts in 2001. House of Blues concerts was second, selling about 3.8 million tickets.
Currently, Clear Channel operates and/or exclusively books 135 live entertainment venues, including 41 amphitheaters in the U.S. and 30 venues in Europe. House of Blues Concerts owns, operates or exclusively books 20 arena and amphitheater venues throughout North America, and also owns eight House of Blues clubs.
In addition to its concert-industry pursuits, Clear Channel operates about 1,225 radio stations and 37 television stations in the U.S., and commands a network of 776,000 billboards.
Last August, Denver-based concert promoter Nobody in Particular Presents filed an anti-trust suit against Clear Channel, accusing the company of “monopolistic and predatory practices.” A month earlier, Rep. Robert E. Andrews (D-N.J.) asked Attorney General John Ashcroft to look into Clear Channel’s business practices after complaints from concert promoters in his state.

Local rock heroes Aerosmith, Staind, Godsmack and Tribe of Judah (Gary Cherone’s new band) walked away from Thursday night’s (4/11) ceremony with two trophies each, while other nationally-known favorites such as Carly Simon, American Hi-Fi and former Letters to Cleo singer Kay Hanley landed single awards.
The ceremony, which took place at the city’s Orpheum Theater, also included performances by winners Godsmack, Tribe of Judah and Hanley, among others.
Staind, whose members were not on hand, claimed the evening’s top prize for Act of the Year, while the group’s chart-topping radio staple “It’s Been A While” took the Single of the Year award.
With Staind out of town, Godsmack was the event’s unrivaled crowd-favorite. The group snagged the award for Outstanding Rock Band, and frontman Sully Erna, who demonstrated the strength and power of his voice while singing the group’s new hit “I Stand Alone,” was recognized with the award for Male Vocalist of the Year.
“I told [Staind frontman] Aaron Lewis to make it to the awards this year, but he didn’t do it, so f--- him,” Erna joked when accepting his award in the latter category, for which Lewis was also among those nominated.
Absentee winners Aerosmith, who were in New York City working out the final details for their appearance on MTV’s April 17 “mtvICON” tribute--snagged Album of the Year for last year’s “Just Push Play,” and Video of the Year for that album’s first single, “Jaded.”
Up-and-coming act Tribe of Judah--fronted by former Extreme and Van Halen frontman Gary Cherone--picked up the award for Outstanding New Rock Band (Indie Label), while Cherone himself was crowned Outstanding Male Vocalist (Indie Label).
Cherone and company performed “Left for Dead,” a song featured on the group’s forthcoming album, which is tentatively set for a May release. The singer’s characteristically theatrical and flamboyant stage persona was accented by a long-sleeved black shirt that had been cut to leave his entire torso exposed.
The outfit caused Godsmack’s Erna, who picked up his award just after Tribe of Judah’s performance, to joke in his thick Boston accent: “Didn’t Gary Cherone’s nipples look wicked good tonight?”
Cherone told SoundSpike during an interview following the awards that he thought Erna’s crack was funny. “Yeah, the shirt--can you call it a shirt?--the ‘sleeve’ was maybe a bit risqué,” he said.
Erna’s acceptance speech became more serious when he told the cheering legions of Godsmack fans in attendance: ‘’This band has had some serious success. We’ve never bailed on you. We never will, and we’re going to stay here forever.”
American Hi-Fi nailed down the Song of the Year award for the hit “Flavor of the Weak,” while Kay Hanley got the nod for Outstanding Female Vocalist (Indie). Both winners performed during the ceremony.
The evening’s surprise highlight was area legend Carly Simon’s win in the Female Vocalist of the Year category, which she was on hand to accept. “This is an amazing surprise and an honor,” the singer said after a lengthy round of applause had subsided. She then joked, “I’m glad that you voted for somebody to represent the youth movement.”
Other notables who appeared at the show included Mighty Mighty Bosstones frontman Dicky Barrett, who presented the award for Best Song. “I’ve written some of this city’s worst songs,” he quipped, “but I wrote a good one, at one point,” he added, presumably referring to the group’s 1997 breakthrough hit “The Impression That I Get.”
Renowned early-’80s punk act Mission of Burma was honored with this year’s Hall of Fame Award.
The ceremony was hosted by former New Kids on the Block member, and now solo artist, Joey McIntyre, who performed the night’s opening number. McIntyre joked that the last time he had performed at the BMA’s was with “four shmucks from Dorchester,” the Boston-area community that his former New Kids bandmates hail from.
Boston Music Awards nominees were selected by a committee of 500 music industry professionals, including record label reps, club owners, radio deejays, booking agents, music journalists, and others, according to a press release. Winners were determined by an “equally-weighted combination of music industry committee voting and public voting.”

Michael Jackson, Tony Bennett, k.d. lang, Ruben Blades and BeBe Winans are scheduled to appear at an April 24 fund raiser for the Democratic Party at New York’s Apollo Theater.
Former President Bill Clinton, comedian Chris Tucker and actress Cicely Tyson will emcee the show, which will kick off the party’s national “Every Vote Counts” voter registration drive.

R. Kelly will release the CD single “Soldier’s Heart” on April 23 to benefit the country’s armed forces. Proceeds from the sales of the song will be donated to Army Emergency Relief, created in 1942 to provide emergency financial assistance to U.S. Army soldiers (both active duty and retirees) and their eligible family members. A portion will also be donated to hospitalized veterans in Kelly’s native Chicago.

Eminem reportedly has settled a civil lawsuit stemming from a 2000 incident in which he allegedly pistol-whipped a man he saw kissing his then-wife, Kimberly Mathers, at a Detroit-area nightclub. The rapper reportedly will pay the man, John Guerra, $100,000.

Mary J. Blige, Cher and Celine Dion will perform during the fifth “VH1 Divas” concert, which is set for May 23 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. The show, which will be telecast live on VH1, will raise money for the VH1 Save the Music Foundation. According to the network, the past four “VH1 Divas” specials are among the top five highest-rated broadcasts in VH1’s history. Additional performers, presenters and special guests will be announced as they are confirmed.

A May 25 debut has been set for “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” a new Las Vegas stage show celebrating the music of Stevie Wonder. Chaka Khan will headline the performances--which will take place at the Showroom at the Venetian hotel--through June. After that, producers hope to bring in other performers to headline.

Dozens of acts slated for Atlanta’s Music Midtown
Stone Temple Pilots, Incubus, Kid Rock, No Doubt, Ja Rule and Counting Crows are among the more than 120 acts on the bill of Atlanta’s ninth annual Music Midtown Festival.

The three-day festival, which takes place May 3-5 at a 35-acre complex in midtown Atlanta, is expected to draw more than 300,000 people.
Music Midtown’s lineup features 10 stages, and the bill includes international, national, regional and local acts. The festival site includes an artists market with more than 70 vendors--including an oxygen bar and a therapeutic massage area.

Rolling Rock Town Fair features Godsmack, OutKast, Nickelback, more

Dubbed Rolling Rock Town Fair 3.3, the one-day concert festival takes place on July 27 at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds in Latrobe, Pa., according to a press release. (The town is also home base for event-sponsor Rolling Rock beer.)
In addition to musical performances, the event will also feature magicians, interactive games, stilt walkers and watermelon-eating contests.
Last year’s Rolling Rock Town Fair featured Stone Temple Pilots, Live, Deftones, Incubus, Staind, Oleander and Tantric, while the inaugural 2000 edition featured Red Hot Chili Peppers, Moby, Fuel, and others. Both shows sold out.
Tickets to the event hit the box office on April 26 and cost $48, according to organizers. More information can be found at the event’s official website.

Lollapalooza, which has been on hiatus since 1997, won’t make its return until next year, MTV News reported.
“Having gotten a late start, we felt it would be smart to start building now for summer 2003,” Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell said in a statement. “It will afford us a chance to get the headliner we really want.”
Late last year, organizers said that they planned to bring the festival back in 2002.

On Wednesday (4/10), Lit performs a concert at Paloma Valley High School in Menifee, Calif., to help raise money for the school’s athletic complex. According to the band’s publicist, Lit’s performance is expected to raise $12,000, which will help fund construction of snack bars at the facility. Lit opens a headlining tour on April 18.

Neil Young - “Are You Passionate?” (Reprise)
Fans who have recently seen Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young on http://www.soundspike.com/story/7>tour have heard at least one song from Young’s new solo album: “Let’s Roll,” a Young-penned song about the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. Bonnie Raitt - “Silver Lining” (Capitol)
Raitt’s first studio album since 1998’s “Fundamental” features two songs by Tommy Sims, Gordon Kennedy and Wayne Kirkpatrick, the team that wrote the Eric Clapton hit “Change the World.” The new CD’s title track was penned by David Gray, and appeared on his 1999 album “White Ladder.” Raitt, Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake--who first collaborated on “Fundamental"--produced the new album.

Goo Goo Dolls - “Gutterflower” (Warner Bros.)
The Buffalo, N.Y., pop-rock group returns from a four-year respite with a dozen new tracks, including the debut single “Here is Gone.” The band and longtime collaborator Rob Cavallo produced the new album. The Goo Goo Dolls will headline the Pioneer Rock & Roar Concert at the 28th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach (Calif.), taking the stage at the conclusion of the race on April 13.

Steve Earle - “Sidetracks” (Artemis)
This collection of “unreleased or underexposed” material includes “Some Dreams,” which was written for the soundtrack of the new Disney baseball movie “The Rookie.” Among the others tracks are a previously unreleased version of Steve’s duet with Sheryl Crow on “Time Has Come Today,’’ originally heard on the “Steal This Movie” soundtrack. Tracks from the soundtracks of “The Horse Whisperer” ("Me and the Eagle") and “Dead Man Walking” ("Ellis Unit One") are also included, along with Earle’s covers of Nirvana’s “Breed” and Bob Dylan’s “My Back Pages.”

Now in its fourth decade, Motörhead is still at it. The latest from British metal pioneer Lemmy Kilmister and company features the first single, “Shut Your Mouth,” an mp3 version of which is available for downloading at the band’s official website. The site is also giving away copies of the CD via a contest hosted at its site. The group’s world tour kicked off on Sunday (4/9) in California, and will travel around the U.S. through late May.

Brute - “Co-Balt” (Widespread)
Brute is jam-band Widespread Panic fronted by cult-hero Vic Chesnutt, a pairing of Georgia-based artists that first surfaced on 1993’s “Nine High a Pallet.” According to a press release, “recording the rough mixes for “Co-Balt” in Keane’s home studio over a three-day period in January of 2001, the Brute boys had no time to compose, let alone rehearse. Vic made selections from his ‘trunk of songs’ each day then the group simply hit record and played, a process not unlike their first collaboration.” Brute performs on Tuesday (4/9) at the Tabernacle, in Atlanta.

Dokken - “Long Way Home” (Sanctuary/CMC Int’l)
Don Dokken’s eponymous rock outfit delivers the follow-up to 1999’s “Erase the Slate.” That album was the group’s first without guitar-virtuoso George Lynch, who co-founded the quartet in the early ‘80s along with namesake and frontman Dokken, drummer Mick Brown and bassist Jeff Pilson. Since “Erase the Slate,” Pilson has also jumped ship and is now working on a new project with Lynch. Dokken and Brown are forging ahead with new bassist Barry Sparks and new guitarist John Norum, according to the band’s official website. A tour kicks off in Europe next month.

“MTV Unplugged No. 2.0,” Lauryn Hill‘s first album since 1998’s Grammy-winning “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” will be released by Columbia Records on May 7. The two-CD collection captures Hill’s intimate 2-hour performance of new acoustic music, which originally premiered on MTV2 on March 10. A DVD/VHS edition of the program is scheduled for a late May release.

Goo Goo Dolls are scheduled to perform a 30 minute set at FYE, 1290 6th Avenue, New York, at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday (4/8). The band will then sign autographs until 9 p.m.

Melissa Schuman has departed Dream, a girl group on Sean P. Diddy Combs’ Bad Boy label. Combs told MTV that she is pursuing an acting career.

Guitarist Aaron Kamin of The Calling suffered a “severe electrical shock” on Thursday (4/4) during sound check at the Brew Pavilion in Bangkok, Thailand, according to RCA Records. Kamin was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where he was treated and released. He is recovering from burns to the his hands.

India.Arie performs a live concert tonight (4/4) at the New York nightclub Exit. The show will be filmed for a one-hour special titled “India.Arie Up Close and Personal,” which will premiere on the Oxygen cable network on May 3.

The trio of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes & Warren Cuccurullo is coming to an end; the upcoming Japanese dates will be their last together after which Warren will be bound for America and a new project with his pre-Duran band, Missing Persons. Simon & Nick are to be reunited with original band members Roger, Andy and John Taylor for the first time in 15 years.
An album will be scheduled for release some time in 2002.

The European version of Celine Dion‘s new album, “A New Day Has Come,” is labeled with a label warning that advises listeners not to insert the CD into their computer. “It’s possible that after you read the warning and decide to put it in anyway, it could crash your computer,” a Sony representative told CNET.
The European discs are encrypted with Sony’s Key2Audio technology, which protects against digital copying.
