February 14, 2011 - Matisyahu, America's premier Hasidic Jewish reggaeapper, already had a pretty substantial fan base before he took the stage at Stubb's in Austin, TX, on Feb. 19, 2005, during SXSW. But following his epic performance that night, word spread like wildfire, and suddenly the mainstream was taking notice.
November 4, 2008 - Matisyahu says that fans who listened to his debut album, "Shake Off the Dust ... Arise," only got a taste of his musical abilities. His EP "Shattered" and upcoming full-length, "Light," will really give listeners a sense of what he's about.
September 4, 2008 - Fresh from a jaunt to Jamaica where he recorded with masters Sly & Robbie, Matisyahu is polishing his chops for a huge north American tour. To date, the reggae star has booked 38 shows for this fall/winter.
August 7, 2008 - The 2008 edition of the long-running Vans Warped Tour is finally winding down. The festival sets up shop tomorrow (8/8) at the Boise area's Idaho Center Amphitheatre, with stops to follow in Washington, Oregon and California.
Fans will enjoy the usual heavy hitting punk and alt-rock fare, as well as Halfpipe Skate Ramp action. The tour's lineup has varied from location to location, but has included acts such as All That Remains, All Time Low, Charlotte Sometimes, Classic Crime, Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes, Horrorpops, Motion City Soundtrack, Norma Jean, Relient K, Rise Against, Say Anything, TAT, Against Me! and The Bronx.
The award for most surprising act on the roster goes to Matisyahu, who played 3 dates in early July--though we shouldn't be surprised at all, since he's pretty much cornered the market on breaking stereotype.
SoundSpike writer/photographer John Voket attended Warped's July 28 stop in Englishtown, NJ, to write about the event and take some photos of the action.
